more of a backcountry and crawler crowd around here, no one really overlands.

btw, your new plate bumper would look cool with some craft beer spilled on it

    Not an overbrander.
I disagree. A lot of folks on TW call themselves "overland."

And yes, it would. I'll waste the craft beer on my bumper and drink my Miller.

wait, is that a comment on that facebook pic? that is pretty funny if it was. haha

if they call themselves overbrand then they need to make their trips quite a few weeks longer and through a few other counties. but its cool, like you said "let other people like what they like"

I wish I was a overbrander, I still have to work on the retiring part of that scenario first. Then this rig is going to costa rica and panama and may just get parked there.

dood posted a pic of his truck and his girlfriend in 6 slides. one had her cleaning it in her bikini and he put his miller in the pic that he took. Think it was on "toyota tacoma enthusiast". I made a craft beer comment you would have properly hated

if I was a comedian and did a show, I have a feeling you would be my heckler. lets go on the road with this show!

I haven't seen it. My beer of choice is really Miller though.

And I think you mean "let's go off the road with this show."

I feel like this is actually pretty spot on. And I don't drink craft beer, but I lived in a hipster community in San Diego, and walking in to some random hipster bar (they made excellent sandwiches lol) with a Budweiser shirt on, I thought the bartender was gonna spit on me, after his crown beat me to death with craft beer bottles.

No idea. I hated the neighborhood. I went to one bar with the wife once and just wanted a bud light and when they arrogantly said they didn't have any of that "crap" I asked if I could have whatever beer tasted like that. They were not a fan of me lol

There is no doubt that the whole "overlanding" thing has gotten really trendy, but it makes for easier camping, in the middle of nowhere, if that's your thing. I was at a crossroads 10 years ago with my Scout on 33" tires. Cut the fenders, get Dana 60's, throw some 37's on there... or slap a Fourwheelcamper designed for a Chevy Blazer on it. If I went with the former route, camping trips would be solo, and my wife wouldn't tag along. Instead, we had some great trips, great stories, and a mobile ski lodge. In hindsight, I should have done both...

Expedition Portal was totally different when I joined 10 years ago. Everyone was building their shit and there wasn't a lot of outfitters in the US. The basic premise was building a vehicle that could self- support you far away from civilization and services. Then everyone started getting fancy, including myself. It's not a bad hobby. I'm glad more people are getting into it and products are becoming cheaper. Except for that fancy fridge Andy has. He eats ice cream on the trails for godsake!

I agree that venturing into the backwoods isn't for everyone, but everyone who has done it started wheeling at Hollister or places like it. For me it was a canyon in Woodside owned by a friend's family (in 1992). Three hill climbs, a tabletop jump, and a mud pit. $900 1965 Scout 80 with no roll cage or lap belts...and posi-traction. Great times.

I think Andy & Nick's message is to go try some trails in the Sierras. If you end up hating it, Hollister will be there. If you love it, gear up and build the truck so you enjoy it more. Start with the basics:
    • Ditch the cooler and get a fridge. Stock with microbrews and expensive cheese.
    • Replace all Coleman stuff with fancy Snowpeak gear.
    • Do contradictory things, like eat out of a cast iron dutch oven with a superlight titanium spork. Nothing says "Expo" like lightweight titanium cookwear in a 3 ton truck.
    • Mount some shit to the roof and sides of your truck. Also the back. The less aerodynamic the better.
    • Get an axe with a hardwood hand-carved handle and a beaver dick sheath.
Or just throw what you have in some Rubbermaid bins and give it a go. Just bring a shovel and bucket for campfires and make sure to pack out.

And for the record, my username is "OverlaNERD", not Overlander. My truck hasn't crossed any borders. I'm just a fancy camper.

Well said, Phil. It's hard to disagree that there is elitism in the overland community though, when Tim (OP) posted pictures of his truck getting stuck and the thread turned into "Hollister isn't wheeling. You have to drive through the mountains to be a real wheeler."

But then again. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one.
