Weight Limit on Topper????

I have a ARE fiberglass topper that has the ORE option (Factory Line X coating). I have the reinforced fiberglass roof with the Yakima tracks and rails. I found a great deal on a AutoHome hard shell roof top tent and i'd like to buy it and mount it on top of my topper. RTT weighs about a 100, I weigh about 180, and the only person I would share it with doesn't weigh anymore than 100 pounds. So in total, at most I would need the topper to support is about 400 pounds while parked and sitting completely still. Can anyone tell me if this is safe to do and whether the topper can support this type of weight? First hand knowledge would be great. Thanks.

 

I'd ask ARE.

Sounds perfectly fine from your description, but nobody else knows for sure except the manufacturer. Everyone else is just opinion.

 

Most of the general retail ones do not have the highest load ratings from what I recall. I have a Leer and I recall that I was told if if I wanted more weight I should have picked up the commercial version, they added some support to the topper. Curious on this as well. I need to look up the ratings on my shell.

 

Found this from Leer's site. I would expect it is similar for ARE. Unless you have a commercial one your prob in the same boat as me.

When factory-installed on a LEER Model 100XQ, 100XL, 100XR, 100R, 180, or 122, the Thule Aero Bar and Tracker II Roof Rack systems have a maximum load capacity of 150 lbs. When factory-installed on a LEER Model 100RCC or 180CC, the Thule Professional Roof Rack system has a maximum load capacity of 400 lbs. There are other critical factors in safely carrying and securing loads to your roof rack – these factors are explained in the instructions provided by Thule with the roof rack.

 

i got a ARE cap with track I mount my JB tent on top with 2 set of thule square bar no problem no sag, the store said that the ARE is good for 450 dynamic load, static is more highes

 

Is that the commercial topper? Generally the commercial ones are good for 4-500 give or take. Regular ones not so much. didn't think of it myself at the time for a tent.

I have. Have not found anything concrete. More than anything else I've seen people speaking from their personal experiences that while parked, they've had no issues with the same type of setup as what I'm considering. The toppers max weight limits the companies put out are for dynamic weight loads and do not so much reflect accurate numbers for weight limits that are evenly distributed while parked. So because they only give a dynamic max weight rating, its hard to know for sure one way or another what its actual capabilities are.

I had a Leer 100xq with a prinsu rack, once carried 8 3/4" plywood on top with no visual problems.

There is a rate loading imprinted on most.

 

And? As I've already said, I'm looking for other peoples first hand knowledge on the subject as the load rating you brought up is a dynamic rating. Meaning weighed down and the load is under high stress. The manufacture rating doesn't cover what it can realistically support under the least stressful conditions.

 

If its ridiculous as you say, you certainly don't need to waste your time on it. Just keep on scrolling.
