I know what you guys mean. All I'm saying is that Icon is prob not calling him up and notifying him of every time this happens. I won't be buying their product either, unless they redesign it. TW is just one avenue of hearing about this type of situation, so it's possible there are more, that's all. I just think we all should know about issues on products before we buy, that's all. I hope Icon develops a plan to avoid this type of situation, and take care of the peeps who already have their products.

 

I like my odds with my Icon setup. People that adhere to the tech notes regarding preload and have the right bump stops will be fine in all probability.

 

I guess it bothers me a little since I am an engineer by trade. When my name is tied to something, I am responsible for the safety of that product in that it meets all specifications and limitations, furthermore that it should be robust with a certain amount of a safety factor for extreme cases. I guess this is where being in the shock business might differ as some components might get categorized as "fatigue-able?"

I say this "loosely" as I am not in full knowledge of the history of the more common competitors, but in a common/everyday/non-race environment, I would expect these items to meet and exceed these demands to a certain degree. The fact that multiple members can vouch that this issue not only exists with Icon, but that it is a common enough occurance to be considered a design flaw bothers me. You would think at a minimum Icon would step up and announce a customer "recall" avenue for those who have the older design. They brag that they are the best and blah blah blah, yet they could be so much better if they offered the support for their products without customers having to wait until truck failures occur that will in some way affect the consumer like the OP has.

I know I got them on my ride, and you could call me a fan boy to a degree, but I would be curious to see if this issue happened with King. They are quite involved with the racing circuit and I would think they wouldn't want to have a possible rep like this. With that being said, I know Icon has a presence in racing as well. I just don't understand how a company can have a somewhat consistent failure and yet "there isn't enough demand" to make a solid product for the AVERAGE CONSUMER?

Do they state more than that? I know most coilover companies will state that to exceed the factory heights is messing with the performance of the product for comfort reasons and what not. I would be curious if Icon would state any possible component failure if anyone exceeds the preload height settings.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Icon more caters to "the weekend warrior", so when you have an experienced person behind the wheel really pushing it, this situation is probably more likely to happen. But the more important point to me is that why, even if you aren't out racing everyday, would you knowingly buy a product that has a design flaw? and that is where my decision falls. I will tell you my plan was to go the Icon route, even when I first heard about the flaw here. I have heard great things about Icon, their customer service, warranty, etc.

I might be their number you can call directly. I sent my coilovers to get rebuilt and checked the return label to say 21 pounds. I called and said they forgot one and they said no it was fine we just rebuilt one and both are in the box. Never believed it and when it finally came I was 1 coilover short. Took them a week to look and figure it out and had to send me a new one and shipping was additional time. Not to happy because my truck sat on stands an additional 2 weeks because of it.

 

I have heard that Icon has decent service and stuff too, so I am surprised that these issues exist. With that being said though, with my random BROs over on the west...they say no one runs Icons out there. Maybe Icon is more east dominant? I have buddies on the east as well who have swapped them out as well.

this thread is a perfect example of why advice/product reviews from TW are bullshit. Dude has 4 year old shocks, drives the piss out his truck(well, not THIS time, so he says)admits he has flattened his superbumps bump stops, a sign he runs the piss out of the truck. Breaks something, then bitches it should be fixed for free. Probably does no inspections after wheeling or maintenance, because if anything breaks, it's obviously the products fault, not neglect. Then some idiot chimes in they are marketed for "weekend warriors" and not for experienced drivers? An experienced driver would know they probably broke something from pushing the limits, fix it and be on their way. Not bitching about it in the internet, and certainly not without contacting the manufacturer. Who the f**k sends e-mails IF you have a problem instead of calling? Good to see plenty jump on the TW pitty train to make the OP feel more masculine and feel like a badass for switching to a different brand. Icon should have told him to go fuck himself, so I'd say in this case, when the OP make correct attempts to resolve the issue, Icon went above and beyond in service.

Sounds like you are mad at Icon for taking care of him. It also seems like most of the people getting mad are people with Icons, just sayin.

 

I was upset they lost my coilover and my truck sat longer than need be, but they gave me atleast gave me 1 new one.
