    This from USA Today
Toyota today announced a voluntary safety recall of select 2010 Tacoma 4wd pickups. The 8,000 trucks will to inspected for possible cracks in the front drive shaft that could cause it to separate. Toyota says the recall involves parts from two specific production lots. Dealers will inspect the shafts for specific lot numbers and Toyota says that "based upon the inspection results, in a limited number of cases, the front drive shaft may need to be replaced."
Toyota says the inspection takes about ten minutes and that owners will be notified by mail in mid-March. Toyota is offering answers to questions about the recall at www.toyota.com/recall and at the Toyota Customer Experience Center: 1-800-331-4331.

Sweet flippin' mother of pearl! Just checked my door panel; built in Cal and the date was 10/09...I'm OK thus far I think? Having the trans flashed this Monday...guess I should have them inspect...

Toyota Recalls Tacoma Trucks over Propeller Shaft

WASHINGTON (AP) — Toyota is recalling about 8,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from the 2010 model year to fix a problem with the front propeller shaft that could cause the vehicle to lose control.
The automaker told dealers Friday that a crack could develop that could lead to the front driveshaft separating and falling from the truck, causing the vehicle to lose control.
While small in number, the recall is the latest issued by Toyota, which has called back 8.5 million vehicles worldwide for faulty gas pedals and brakes. The recall involves 4-wheel drive Tacomas that were built from mid-December 2009 to early February 2010.
A notice to dealers says the part was manufactured by Dana Corp.
A Toyota spokesman says most of the vehicles are on dealer lots or in the distribution chain.

my door panel says the same, built in Cali and date of 10/09.
I'm having the 10 min. inspection done just because. Seems they start with a small batch of VIN #s, then broaden it. So being that we are only a couple months from cutoff, we should still get it checked.

It's been said before, but I'll say it again. Toyota didn't build the front drive shaft. Our frames, drive shafts and front diffs our made by Dana Corp. Crawl under your truck and take a look around. You'll see a label on your front (4x4 only) and rear drive shafts like the one below.

I don't disagree. All I'm saying is that I agree that there probably wasn't a magic cutoff date between November and mid December. They've used Dana for a long time. Same company that was the cause of early model Tacoma's frame rusting out.

I feel the same way. I am not thrilled about the drive shaft recall. I have a 2009 and it makes me question the integrity of my front drive shaft.

Last week I was under the truck greasing the zerks, and gave it a good look. It looks and feels solid. I know they say the cracks are invisible to the naked eye, and I believe them... Based on how I have been using my truck I would think that if mine had the quality issues, my drive shaft would have exploded by now.

Also, this kind of seals the deal for my decision to purchase an extended warranty. The way I see it, it's just a cheap insurance policy for the truck. I think the 100K extended warranties can be had for about ~$900.

Where are the cracks supposed to be? If it's on the yoke, it could be a casting issue that earlier models won't have a problem with. Dana most likely date codes their parts so that if there is a quality issue, they know what vehicles to recall.

kinda off topic, but dude, that Arnold avatar is the shit!

I kinda veered away from extended warranty because I thought if there was a major issue with the truck it would be covered by a recall. Maybe I was right?

True, its cheap insurance. But... Think about the manufacturer that in your opinion makes the least reliable vehicle. Dodge? Isuzu? Would you purchase an extended warranty if you bought one of their vehicles?

What is this saying about your perception of the quality of your vehicle? This is the uphill battle that Toyota faces.

It really doesn't matter that Toyota did/did not manufacture the driveshaft. Toyota installed it in a vehicle they distribute and they are ultimately responsible for the parts content of their product. It may affect the Dana-Toyota relationship somehow, but this is outwardly a Toyota problem.

FWIW - There is another recall brewing for power steering in the Toyota Corolla.

SManZ, You read me right. I believe and expect something major to go wrong with my truck and I hope it happens within the first 100K miles.

Within the last two weeks alone two TW members had their 3rd members blow up on them.

    1. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/75540-i-broke-my-rear-end.html
    2. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/74131-blown-ring-pinion-e-locker-type.html
I also know of at least two TW members who have had their transmissions completely replaced.

    Thanks!

Twirlin, Did you know that you can purchase an extended warranty any time before the 36K mile factory warranty expires? I didn't buy one when I bought my truck, but I plan on buying one before I hit 36K miles. Shopping around for the extended warranty can save you a bunch of money.

    Ugh...thats disgusting.

I'm seriously considering not modding my truck and selling the parts I took off the '09. I've got all winter to mull it over.

Not strictly related to this recall but it is drive shaft related. My Tacoma was leaking a few drops of trans fluid. Not a lot but enough to spot my driveway. I took it in last week and the dealer replaced my driveshaft and said it was leaking through the yoke. It seems to have stopped the leak.
