    Hi all,
    Not sure where to post this, as i didnt find a dedicated forum for Montana folks...

    I live in Portland, OR and may have to drive to Plentywood, MT to take a friend to see he ill grammy and she doesnt have any funds for travel.

    So am thinking on driving her up in the Taco...

    I believe its still winter up there...

    Other than good tires and snow chains... What else would i need to not have issues up there?

    Do i need a block heater, battery jacket, etc etc???

    Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!!

    If you have good tires and chains, you'll be fine. Avoid travelling during storms and you'll be ahead of the game.

    Do you think block heater and all that jazz would be overkill?

    I haven't been really exposed to icy/snowy climate (other than the recent "snowmaggedon" in the Portland Metro), so I'm not sure what to expect or be prepared for rig wise.

    No need for severe cold weather prep on your truck, unless you're moving to Plentywood. A few cold starts won't hurt anything.

    Be cautious of the wind on the east side of the divide, even on nice days. If the roads are slick it could blow the truck around. No need to be freaked out though. Our weather is like our bears - it doesn't really want to hurt you, but if you're being downright stupid...you could find yourself in a tough position.

    Block heater is kind of over kill. I'm originally from Oregon and find driving in Montana really not that bad as they do way better job of maintaining the roads. I was in Portland this year during one of your ice storms. Holy shit. That was Terrible. the biggest problem this time of the year are the damn potholes.

    A most good snow tires and chains. I've never used chains personally. But I don't drive passes during blizzards.

    The block heater is a nice addition if you starting the truck regularly in sub zero temps (especially way sub zero). The oil gets up to temperature much faster in a "warm" block. I use mine when it's really cold. It's not needed though unless you live in a very cold area.

    I actually had fun with the ice storms here... too much fun seeing all the Prius trying to go up their driveway... after thinking they could just go about their daily routine on ice...

    I suggest that you have your starting battery and charging system tested to determine that they are in good condition to deal with ambient temperatures forecasted when you are planning to come to Montana. Most auto parts stores and places that sell batteries, e.g., Wal Mart, will test them free. Temperatures below freezing significantly reduce the battery's performance and capacity. Also battery jumper cables or starter could be useful if you encounter a battery problem.
