I thoroughly ran the numbers. I put my sanity at about $200/day for driving. 3 days of driving made it an even deal for shipping vs. flying and driving. Especially with the cost of taking time off work. I'd rather use those PTO days for vacation or bank them if I need to sell them back later.

What's up with your state? Here in GA the taxation is the same whether purchasing in-state or out of state.

PS. When you are not face to face on a deal, it's super easy for them to screw you or try to.

It's a used vehicle so l doubt they will do anything but they may like the input on a shady dealer.

Washington has a 9.8% sales tax. When you buy and register here, you are required to pay the sales tax. Since I own a home in Oregon, I registered it there. Oregon doesn't have sales tax.

Corporate might not like the idea of a dealership using bait and switch tactics for CPO vehicles. It all depends on interpretation.

It is not CPO though as the Sales Guy made it clear and you still bought it that way. They clearly said they are not responsible for errors on the Site.

What prevents buying in WA and registering it to your Oregon address?

2,000 miles from dealer to my house. At 70 mph, that's 28 hours. At best, that's 2 gross days of driving. More likely 2 1/2. I would have had to leave Illinois on a Friday.

So to get from Seattle->chicago->Rent a car or ride a bus 150 miles to dealership->drive to Seattle It would have been at least a 4 day trip.

sooooooo dealers used to be able to market the vehicles as qualifying for certification, and then you could negotiate that into the price etc. most manufacturers (i'm not 100% about toyota but i imagine they're the same as everyone else) don't allow for that any more. HOWEVER the certification needs to be re-upped with toyota every 60 days or so i believe. the dealer may not have re-upped it between when they initially marketed it and then sold it to you. But knowing that it wasn't certified and buying it anyway is kind of on you

certified vehicles have to come with 2 keys, non certified come with whatever they come with unfortunately. but you may want to check with toyota if that dealer is negotiating on the certification. that's an old practice that is frowned upon by most manufacturers these days

It's a purchase sales tax. All sales in washington require sales tax. There are some stores on the OR/WA border that will waive the sales tax, but Washington just voted to close that loophole.

If I bought in California and paid their tax (let's say it's 4%), I would still have to pay 5.8% here in washington to reach the total of 9.8% sales tax. Washington is greedy, we have a lot of freeloaders to pay for. lol

Thanks, that's clearer. When I last looked into it the states I checked allowed for tax waivers on purchase if you were taking the vehicle out of state. Clearly WA isn't one that does that.

no you pay the tax in whatever state you register it in. some states reciprocate and will collect sales tax for the other state for them (for example i bought a car in ohio over the summer and the collected mass sales tax and sent it to the registry for me)

I bought it after contract was agreed and deposit was made. It's possible I could have lost my deposit if I backed out. Also, there MUST be liability for site disclosures. It prevents bait and switch deals.

Illinois waived the sales tax. When I went to the Washington dealers, they wouldn't waive it. That's why I didn't buy in Seattle. I found a 2017 Limited I would have bought here if they would have.

No. You'd have had clear legal recourse to get your deposit back due to the new information revealing what you thought you were buying wasn't in fact what you were buying.

The trick is proving that the incorrect information was intentional. Good luck on that.

Generally bait-and-switch suits only occur after enough customers complain to the local/state regulatory agency and they then take up a case against the dealer.

it's not about waiving the sales tax. it's about collecting it for the other state. illinois being so far probably doesn't collect for oregon. washington and oregon probably have an agreement since they are neighboring to collect for each other

Sorta. It's a fuzzy line. Since Oregon doesn't have sales tax, there was nothing for Illinois to collect, unless they felt like collecting for Illinois. I don't know the intricate details of what their options are.
