Rear Axle BD20???

Alright guys, automagic (idk why autocorrect did that but I like it) trd sport with BD20 axle. If I understood right this is a carryover from 2nd Gen, question I have is how far back does this axle go. According to ARB it uses the same locker. P/N

So if I come across a totaled for sale whole truck that had an elocker could I use it? Would I need to pull the locker or could I simply change third members?

Was the BD20 used on first gens also, same third member??

I'm just trying to save money for real guys. Don't bash and say arb.

I tried searching and couldn't find answers I was looking for, but obviously I searched, bc arb said the rd129 can be used all the way back to the T100 days.

 

Short answer = NO (or YES with $$$$) ... If you don't have a locker and you really really want a locker ARB makes a real one and it will work and probably be cheaper than what you are thinking about doing.

I think yer thinking you need a new Akle.... not sure why, bro. The times you will use it and really NEED it. Count on one hand.

 

Not new axle, just a third member swap. The toyota axles are designed with drop out chunks

I'm confused as well, the third member on the front side of the rear axle has bolts holding it in, you can remove the whole third member gears and all by unbolting driveshaft and removing said bolts.

Notice the picture I have attached, ECGS has 05+ tacoma, Tundra, and T100 listed as same third member. Interesting.. of course this probably means early model Tundra.

Anyways, I just filled up in a stock trd sport dcsb 4x4 got 23.5 mpg hand calculated on fuelly! Not relevant just saying.

 

So idk if I'm misunderstanding, but all of the trucks listed on ECGS share same rear thirds?

 

The Gen3 taco has a new rear diff... it's 8.5" instead of the 8" you're looking at. My 16 Sport has the 8.5" diff because Manual Tranny.. the Auto Sport has the 8" open diff that you can get an ARB locker for. The ORs and Pros have the 8.5" rear locker Auto and manual.

So for me IF I wanted the locker I'd still got ARB even tho everything is there.. problem is going to be the ECU...I won't have programing for the E-locker and no way to upgrade...

No first post tells what truck I have, that's offroad, pro, and manual transmissions that have the all new axle, well new for US. I'm in an auto sport so 8.4.

I am aware of that and was not speaking of yours specifically, the post I Quoted mentions a Sport with Manual having an 8.5" and I was saying I believe it is 8.75"

2016+ All autos (no locker): 8"

All 1st and 2nd gen tacos: 8.4"

Yes, you got hosed if you have an auto and no locker.

Not sure why this chart says 8.9" though

 

I did not even realize you can buy a 16 or 17 2.7L with a Factory Rear Locker...

 

As far as I know you cannot get a 2.7 with a locker.

I'll rearrange my post to better clarify, all manuals have the 8.75"

 

Just because I'm new to Tacos..... I understand that a bigger ring gear is better, but is the 8.0" ring gear really not adequate?

 

I doubt anyone with 35" tires and smaller will ever break an 8" ring gear. I believe Toyota gives both axles the same tow rating, so I don't see any issue with them.

Onther thing to take into consideration is axle shaft size, tooth contact and bearing size. I'm not really sure how those compare.
