Reliability problems .

Yes, the old 90's full size trucks go 300k+ miles on original engine with no problems. Mine went to 245k before I sold it. Old trusty 350 will, I don't trust the new 5.3L though...

back to the topic at hand...

 

I thought only toyota Tacoma's made it to that mileage and GM cars fell apart minute you drive off the lot

My 96 had 245k miles before I sold it, and a buddy of mine that still has his 97 has 365k miles, original motor.

Of course he takes good care of it with maintenance, and it is not the original transmission, but those transmissions are only $600 with warranty from LKQ!

However I don't think the latest engines can do that with all the electronics in them from GM. I have my bet on Toyota there.

Again, I only speak of the late 1990's model GM, NOT anything current, but yes, those were the best GM truck years in my opinion. Those damn things still drive around as crappy looking as they can get, and pass smog without issues. Just amazing!

 

So if 1990 GM was well engineered vehicles, given technology has moved forward, wouldn't it be common sense to extraproliate that today's GM is at least as good as your 240k-345k mile GM trucks ?

 

I think since they are seeing so many problems this early on is the reason for the Below Average Long Term Rating.

 

Unfortunately not because of too many changes, such as designers, engineers, emissions regulations, safety regulations, economy of the time, price to manufacture.... list goes on and on. It's human nature to just assume things continuously get better, but that's not true.

Well I brought my 2017 OR dbl cab last August and I now have 13000 miles on it. I
may be trading her in for a 2020 Tacoma due to the miles I plan to put on her. I have had some minor problems like delayed shift which was resolved by the TSB. I also notice my rear diff howl but I put on some TRD wheels and Nittos and I don't hear it but I know it is still there. The only other problem I had which I fixed myself was the driver head rest would not stay in the same position.

In terms of how she drives I don't have any problems. She shifts just fine and has some get up and go. This is a smooth driving truck on the highway I took it to the mountains one time and had to go up several steep hills which all I did was press the ECT button and problems. City driving she seems to burn a lot of gas but then again that is city driving and most cars do the same thing

I just want hope to hold on to her for about 75000 miles then I will trade up for that 2020 if the issues have been worked out. Hopefully by the they will have the PRO in long bed

 

will be one year old in 4 days. 0 problems. 13k miles. We usually get a new car every year, but this one we are keeping longer.

 

They were good engines.... as was the 4.3L. I sold my S-10 with 251K on the clock. Still ran good.

The 5.3L were as good, but I don't know about the newer models with all of the fuel saving stuff on them. Plenty of the early 2000 vintage 5.3Ls out there with lots of miles on them.

 

Always good to hear that! That is what I was banking on when I traded my 6 month old Colorado.
