Dad learned the hard way you cant forgo mechanical repairs after his favorite son wedged his knee between the truck and the hay wagon for lack of brakes. He's had 3 knee replacements since. Thank god it wasn't me.

The T/A, nice car. I miss interiors that weren't neutral.

Parents made me and all my brothers learn on a 2001 Jetta so everyone in my family can drive one. Somehow that Jetta still has its original clutch after 3 teenage boys learning to drive and 141k.
Now my Tacoma is also a MT...only thing I've ever driven

I hope to never own an automatic vehicle. My 2006 Tacoma is a manual, 1985 Toyota pickup is a manual..

Been driving a manual for 20+years. Learned to drive on one. So far, I have had:
-88 S10 4cyl 2wd 5speed. Had no power steering, no power anything. This thing was a tank and got me anywhere I wanted to go.

-93 F150 5.0v8 4wd 5speed. Had dual gas tanks, I thought I was all that to be able to hold 40 gallons of gas haha. Sure do miss the manual tcase and manual hubs.

-95 Jeep wrangler "sahara" edition 4cyl 4wd 5speed. Biggest pile o' crap I have ever owned.

-99 toyota camry v6 5speed. A very rare animal from what I understand. I miss that car, and would be willing to bet its still a dependable beast to this day.

    -current 2010 taco 4.0 4wd 6speed.

I have driven tractors, skidders, other farm equip as well but nothing daily.

I agree that the manual is a dying breed, and it makes me sad.

I got my temps 2 months before I got my license. The first week I had my license my mom took me out 1 time up the street and back to the house and said "you know everything you need to know, go practice on your own now!" My first 2 cars were MT and I absolutely loved them. There is no better driving experience IMO. If my health would allow me to drive a MT every day my Tacoma would have been a MT. Unfortunately health dictated the transmission on the Taco as a DD so now I look forward to my next secondary fun car that will be a MT! Every now and then I go steal one of my parents cars for a day just so I can drive a manual. Luckily they love my tacoma so they dont mind me borrowing a car and leaving it with them to drive.

90% of my friends dont know how to drive manuals. I try and teach everyone who is willing to learn.

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST! This NOT a "Drunk Grandpa" story! It is a spec list of what my uncle did to this truck!
The reason this particular truck is significant to me is because my uncle taught me how to drive stick in it. Both were pictures were taken in the driveway my uncle's old house in the Lehigh Valley area back in July 2012. My uncle and his wife sold that house and relocated to Myrtle Beach shortly after these pictures were taken, and I learned how to drive stick when we went to visit them in August 2014...
    622163_4439425461003_733263137_o.jpg

    277619_4439426181021_48847457_o.jpg

    The facts:
1)Base model 1991 Toyota regular cab short bed 2WD pickup, originally red with a gray interior.
2)Purchased from original owner in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 2010 or 2011 with obscenely low miles (like 40K or 50K on a 1991 22RE 5-speed Toyota pickup in 2010!) for a surprisingly low price.
3)This WAS a bare bones/no-frills base model, with no power steering, no power brakes, and no A/C. It had an AM/FM radio and that was it.
4)My uncle very quickly added a CD player and new speakers, as well as the rims you see on the truck in this picture. The rims are actually from a 1974 AMC Hornet and have Toyota center caps.
5)My uncle did not care that the truck lacked A/C and was perfectly fine not having it. However, he ended up adding A/C because his wife refused to ride in it if it didn't have A/C.
6)My uncle went to a salvage and removed the entire A/C system from a wrecked 1994 extra cab Toyota pickup with the same engine. Adding A/C was incredibly easy, and since the donor truck was a 1994, the system was R134a and my uncle was able to install and charge the system himself.
7)You may also notice that the truck has the vent windows. Those are NOT original. My uncle took the vent window doors from the same 1994 extra cab the A/C system came from. He got them for free because he gave the original doors from this truck to the salvage yard owner.
8)The truck looked like shit before it was painted "Harley Orange" because truck was originally red with white graphics, and the wrecked 1994 donor truck was solid black, so the truck looked pretty ghetto.
9)My uncle ripped out the factory bench seat and replaced it bucket seats. He modified the passenger seat so it could be removed when there was no passenger. This maximized cargo space in the cab when the bed was full. My uncle's dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Willy, also preferred the floor to the seat and my uncle always took the seat out when Willy rode with him.
10)This truck does have A/C now and also has a killer sound system, but it is still so basic that it makes my truck look like a luxury vehicle. It still has manual steering, manual brakes, no ABS, an open rear differential, and very few gauges. It has a speedo, a fuel gauge, a temperature gauge, and no tachometer. Things like oil pressure and battery life are in the form of idiot lights.
    11) Please read my story about driving stick for the first time to learn more about this awesome truck!
    12) Yes, my uncle still owns it and uses it as shop truck/rolling billboard for his wheel repair business in Myrtle Beach. NO, it is NOT for sale!

    As of 2017:
Still less than 100K original miles! Yes it DOES HAVE A/C NOW! The stereo system my uncle installed in this little beauty will put the factory Entune system in any 2016-2017 Taco to shame! In 2015, my uncle got rear-ended and one of the bed fenders was destroyed. The at-fault driver's insurance company wanted to total the truck, but my uncle's wife stepped in and basically had to threaten them to force them to fix it. Insurance company paid to fix the truck, but the body shop used the wrong shade of orange on the replacement fender. Aside from the fact that my uncle smokes in the truck, the truck is in mint condition. Again, NOT FOR SALE!

No idea, he was pushing 70 and this was about 30 years ago. That's just how he was with stuff. It was actually grandpa's brother, we still called him uncle. My grandpa was slow and steady and he was ramrod at full throttle, couldn't have been more different.

Learned stick on my brothers 87 MR2 - they'll always be a favorite of mine! Pretty much why I'm buying that FR-S this week.
