I've owned the 2.7L and the V6 in Turd Generation.

The V6 is great if you mash the pedal to the floor. Other than that, it pretty much sucks.

The 2.7L in an Access Cab with the M/T was pretty good but seemed to lack power going up hills. I suppose if one were to leave the mom sized mini van wheels on it it would perform better. Hell, with the 2.7L you can barely put 265/70 17's on there with out taking a huge hit on power.

I'll probably dump this TRD Sport I have in the next year and either drop down to the 2.7L and just put put around town or maybe look at a different brand truck.

If the 4 cylinder had just a wee bit more power it would be perfect for me. It's all about me.

Wow I thought you were happy with your truck for some reason.

What's up Smitty? Long time no talk. I just hit the 5000 mile mark on this bugger. It has more power, yes. I don't like the lack of power in the lower bands. Sure, if you mash your foot to the floor and get it revved up to about 4000 rpms she really rolls. It just doesn't feel right, the V6 in this truck.

I have the Access Cab and the damn truck, the more I look at it, looks like it has a swollen nose or a big fat hump on the hood type front end. It doesn't look proportional.

Since this thread is about the 2.7L I will finish by saying, for my needs, after having driven both, I prefer the 2.7L but damn, if it had just a wee bit more power, I'd be in heaven.

IF I could run a 275/70 17 A/T on the 2.7L and drive it up a hill and hold 60, I'd own one again soon.

The front end of the truck requires a bigger tire to look right.

I wonder what's different for the 2.7 in the Hilanders, they seem to be way more peppy.

The exhaust manifolds on the 2.7 look almost purposely restrictive. I read that Dodge did that with the 5.7 Challengers and Chargers because the performance wasn't much different than the 6.4's.

I heard headers wake up the 2.7 quite a bit. I also read on here that someone hooked a scan tool up to a 2.7 and at wide open throttle it was only reading 88% open.

I as well wish it had a bit more pulling power in the mountains. But that being said I've been pulling 35's with stock gearing for about a month now.

    I'm McLovin my 2.7 though.

That is a nice looking truck. Holy hell though the power loss must be tremendous with those tires. They must weigh at least 60lbs each?

So if I bought my 2017 Tacoma in California (land of the CARB strict emissions) but I want to install a K&N intake am I out of luck? I mean has anyone ever gotten caught doing this "illegal mod"? I thought the Magnaflow cat back and intake would be a nice combo. Also I am moving to Washington soon which is another state on the naughty list :help:

    I weighed, stock are 61lbs, 35's 91lbs. That's wheels and tires. But the 35's are 22% wider!

Flat land driving can't tell over stock, the dual wideband vvti makes a difference. I test drove a 13' 2.7 and there was a noticeable difference in power.

I tried that amount of weight for a short period of time with my 2.7L. Sucker would barely do 55 mph on the flat freeway.

@PuyallupJon I must have the rare 2.7HO

Mine cruises at 80 with the 35's, no head wind of course.

That is great! I had mud tires on and that could have been the problem.

If the 2nd gen access cab was not a prerunner the rear diff were the 3.53 and all the 3rd gens are 3.90 or 4.30 so thats going to make a pretty big difference.

Agreed. I'm pretty happy with the 2.7L power in general, but trying to accelerate up a hill from a stop is surely the most humbling situation I've encountered. On the highway it seems to be acceptable on hills, IMO. Sometimes my relative throttle position will read 65% going up a hill in 5th gear, but will usually hold speed. Sometimes I downshift, sometimes I don't ... depends how lengthy it is.

I am happy with the power it did get noticably better when I got more miles on it around 15000. I have 53000 on it now and just changed the tires they were wore out. The plan was put new tires on same size as my TRD off road and swap wheels and tires and and where out the good years on the sr. But when I drove the truck with new tires on it it acted like I did a performance mod on it. The only thing I can figure out is because I always have wieght in the truck the tires were holding it back. I put 265/70/16 from 245/75/16 they were 10lbs heavier. And all terain light truck tire. I know it does not make sense but I am getting better gas mileage now same driving and same load in truck. Like 1.5 mpg better and I am anal about keeping fuel records as I use it for work.

As long as it's not a civic, you'll be fine. I've never met anyone who drives a truck, gets pulled over and gets in trouble for a non carb intake. However whenever you take your truck in for services, you should replace it back to stock. LOL.

I drive a 2016 2.7 double cab and the ECT PWR mode is my friend. I pretty much use it all the time. It really doesn't affect my MPG either.
