I just want to confirm that what I "think"is true, is indeed accurate.

1). The TPMS sensors from the SR models WILL NOT work with Alloy Wheels?
2). The dealer HAS to program any sensors to work with your truck - regardless of if you purchase them new or used. There is no way to reset/program them yourself?

I am asking because I am about to replace my TRD Sport wheels & stock tires with some of the TRD faux Beadlock paired with some 265/75/16 tires. I am going to give my current wheels and tires to my dad to put on his 2017 SR base model Tacoma - that currently has the steel wheels.

I also think if the dealer is the only one that can program the TPMS sensors to work on my truck that I may just pay them to mount, balance & install the tires and do an alignment after I have my lift installed.

I can tell you this bro.... I just changed out my steelies yesterday to the TRD Off Roads and the TPMS sensor warning light never came on.....the new tires on the TRD ORs don't even have the TPMS sensors in them.....I do carry a tire guage with me at .99 cents....beats the hell out of $139.00 for TOYOTA to mate the sensors and buy new ones at $160.00. I'll take .99 cents for the win.20170215_112144.jpg

Soooo if I get a new pair of wheels and tires do I need new tpms sensors or can I use the stock ones? Will the shop program them to my vehicle or does the dealership have to do it?

That thread was too much for me and useless as I don't keep multiple sets of wheels (Texas here).

I'd rather not have to use sensors and be smart like this guy ^ and keep a tire gauge in my truck. It'd save me quite a bit of money too on a new setup.

If you're wanting to know if your tires are low, get them,.... if you don't care about TPMS, carry a air guage like me and check em every once in a while.
Anyone remember the days when there was no TPMS....I do...and all my Harley bikes never had it either . Air guages still work for me.

I mounted myself yesterday, drove about 90 miles between yesterday and today, 70 miles to work, 35 miles both ways last night, and around town this morning. Light still off.

Yeah just called the dealer on this one and its going to be much cheaper to keep my current TPMS sensors and then just have my dad purchase some for his truck. They said they would move mine to the new tires for free - as part of the standard mount fee, but if I needed new ones programmed to the ECU it would be $140 programming fee - not including the price of the new TPMS's.

I have a 2016 SR, it came with steel wheels. I changed my wheels to the TRD "Beadlock" alloys. I was able to use the same TPMS sensors and they are not rotated 180 degrees.

OK. Hope I can tag my questions and concerns onto this thread.

Taking delivery of a 2017 TRD Sport DCLB next week. Comes with 17" wheels. I plan to buy a used set of auxiliary wheels and M+S tires for winter driving. Can I use 16" rather than 17" for my auxiliary wheels / tires without any issues?

I had a similar setup with my 2007 Tacoma. On that vehicle, which had OEM TPMS, my auxiliary wheels and tires did not have TPMS. When I took my 2007 into a tire store here in the Seattle area a few years ago to install the winter tires / wheels, they wouldn't do the installation saying the law wouldn't allow it because that setup didn't have the TPMS. Fortunately I found a nearby gas station that would do the installation for a reasonable cost. I would rather pay someone else to do this than to do it myself -- I'm 68 and don't have a good setup at home for wheel / tire rotations and changes.

So, my question is -- If I buy a used set of wheels & tires with TPMS, will this require a trip to the dealer for programming the wheels' / tires' TPMS to my truck?

Like most everyone else, I think the TPMS law sucks. One thing I CAN do is use a tire pressure gauge as well as my eyes to spot low tire pressures.

    Hope this is clear. Thanks.

sortof stock. 6112/5160, pro wheels and a tune.
you can also make an air canister, and throw the sensors in it. Pump it up to 30 psi and toss it behind the seat. Thats what I did when got bought my truck in 2011. still works ha

    This takes the cake.

I'm planning on moving from stock steelies to 4runner TE rims and a 265/70/17 tire. If the dealer says they can't re-use my TMPS then I'll have a tire shop do it and go TMPS-less. If the light comes on, I'll throw'em in an air canister under a seat.

Or as many have suggested -- just cover the TPMS warning light with a piece of electrical tape.
