Dude, I've got a 2010 2.7 5sp changed over to full synthetic fluids all around. I've also test drove a 2016 2.7 5 sp and found there is 0 difference between my truck and the 2016 in regards to power. Aside from an Xterra 6cyl and Mustang 5.0, I've been driving small displacement engines all my life.

To say that you were driving 80+ mph uphill in 5th gear and still had room to go....I have to ask....in what direction?

Or you can hope that if the tuners that frequent these forums hear enough complaints it may wake them up enough to develop something for these trucks to help those of us out or not happy with the performance.

Thankfully my truck has been pretty good mechanically. Sure there's a small whine at certain RPMs and maybe a couple other little things but they're not really noteworthy. Even the mid-range acceleration is decent in this truck. My only real complaint is the lack of power in the low RPM range and way the ECU limits the off-the-line acceleration. I could even deal with the lower MPG if it at least could get out of its own shadow when mashing on the accelerator from a stop.

I'm developing tendonitis in my big toe from mashing this pedal to the floor constantly. In all seriousness I'm very heavy on the accelerator as I have a long commute and I like to get there quickly.

I came from owning 2006 4.0 Trd sport. The driving experience is just right. I wish I still had it. The pedal actually reacts when you want more. I agree that the 3rd gen was engineered to save gas. And feels like your one gear higher then you should be in. If I wanted to save gas I would have bought a Prius! Thankfully the ect button fixes this problem.

You don't have to floor these trucks to get decent acceleration. That's a burnt out comment to me. Maybe my truck performs better than other ones or other people want it to take off like a rocket ship barely pressing on the accelerator. I find mine very satisfactory even without the ECT on.

Don't be stupid, you won't find a single post from me asking why I get the mpg that I do. I have no doubts that my fuel mileage is what it is because I have a heavy foot. But if this thing had more power where it should be i wouldnt have to be so heavy footed.

More to the point, even when being easy on the gas i only average 17 mpg combined. And that is hardly better than the v8 in the tundra. If you drive like a grandma, on highway only you can maintain the 23mpg, otherwise you are SOL.

I'm just really confused why you got a v6 if your so into power, that's all. I mean everyone already knows that toyotas get bad gas mileage for what they are so in your situation a v8 sounds a hell of a lot more reasonable..

Toyota could have swept the entire mid size truck market IF they had put in a 4.0 with 300HP. The turbo option is not acceptable as they all require 92 octane gas. Insted, we got a mushy performer with all the other nice features of the Tacoma model. As is now the other trucks in the class are all nice but the Tacoma brand keeps bringing repeat customers back. I bought for reputation and features, frankly did not know of the performance issues. Test drive on flat land is way different than where I live in the hills.

Only time will tell if this model version hold for a while. I would say if they put out a better engine transmission package a lot of trucks will hit the used market.

What 4.0 has 300 hp. What motor do you guys have, because the 3.5 should have more power than the 4.0

KBB did a review of the F150 Raptor with 450HP and 500+ torque.

They got 21mpg on the hwy.

See above. The Raptor has 450HP from a V6. The technology is there, Toyota is just resting on their laurels.

They will do something when the new Frontier and Ranger starts taking a bite out of their sales.

Rumors are that the Ranger will get the 2.7 Ecoboost. 325HP and it flat out moves an F150.

It will be a slayer in a mid-size (if the Ranger turns out to be a midsize. The Canyorado twins look almost as big as the Silverado)

Just came back from a nice little trip. Heading up hill on I95, I started applying pressure to my right foot. Speed did not increase, rpms did not increase, truck did not respond until I got to about 1/2 throttle when it violently downshifted. WTF Toyota?

The problem isn't that "the truck is under powered". It's that it doesn't have as much as what is ideal for the OP. When you sell 190,000 trucks last a year, you have to cater to the needs of the 90% who are buying the truck. For the Tacoma, a majority of buyers are VERY happy with the power and transmission. Point is, you might think it's under powered, but 150,000+ sales for each of the last 4 years means that a lot of people are pretty happy with it.

I've been doing a I've been doing a lot of research on the Raptor. If I had $60,000 to blow on a vehicle I would own one. Hell , I considered buying the standard F-150 EcoBoost but even that was still a little out of my price range.

My gripe about the 3rd Generation Tacoma is simply the initial off-the-line acceleration. It really feels like a turd, and as I said before the Prius has more get-up-and-go off the line than this thing. and that and that is not an exaggeration, it's actual fact when I tried the beat one through an intersection.

I did not expect this to be a hot rod but I did expect more considering modern technology. I believe the only thing limiting this engine from being at its maximum potential is the programming in the computer and how it controls the transmission. There's no reason this thing couldn't jump off the line if the computer was not restricting everything so much. I think and Hope that some simple reprogramming could help this thing come alive a lot more. Now I could be wrong, but that's at least what I'm hoping for.

I don't have any complaints about the mid-range acceleration based on what this thing is. It's simply that initial jump from a dead stop. and the only reason I would complain about the fuel mileage is because it gets similar fuel mileage to vehicles with a ton more power throughout the entire rev range.

I could deal with the 16 MPG (combined) if this thing simply had a little more low-end performance.

If more people fill out things like this online form and perhaps we can get some tuners to produce something.
