Anyone know of any mods or anything available to kill the RPM hangs and delayed and semi-unpredictable throttle response yet?

I'm sure this thing works fine with an automatic, but it can be maddening with a manual transmission. When I remove my foot from the accelerator, I want the RPMs to drop, not hang or even increase for a moment and then slowly come back down. And when I'm stopped and about to start out in first, when I tap the accelerator, I want the RPMs to instantly increase like a normal vehicle, not react with a delay or in some cases do nothing if the throttle pedal application is too fast.

This thing can be maddening sometimes.

Unfortunately it's just how it is. The RPM hang when you let off is for some sort of attempt to assist in 'rev match' down shifting... ok for newbs, horrible for experienced drivers. As for throttle response I can't say it seems that much more lagged than fly by wire imo, though I do have an auto. There was some little modification that came out awhile to replace or enhance the signal from the throttle ped for the 6spds, whether it works or not I can't say.

The way the manual was setup on these trucks, plus the throwout bearing issue... is the only reason I went with the auto over the 6spd.

Yeah, I looked into that a while ago. There already is one available for the 2009 and 2010 year MTs. Unfortunately they do not have them available for the 2005-2008 model years. Thing is, the only thing keeping them from doing it is that apparently the parking brake operating rod is in the way. That's what they told me anyway when I asked them about it some time ago.

It is horribly overpriced, but they have a money back guarantee I believe. If they had one that fit my truck, I'd buy one to at least try it out. If I didn't notice enough of a difference (and I can't help but think I wouldn't), I'd send it back.

Is this just a problem for some vehicles? I am on my 2nd 2010, 5 speed, have never noticed any rpm hang or increase, it (both trucks) behaves just like it should when letting off the throttle, and when shifting. No lag, no delays, no rpm increase or hang whatsoever.

Can't say for sure. I've only driven mine and I test drove one other. Both did it, but I didn't realize just how bad it was on the test drive.

I've posted about it before though and lots of others have chimed in, agreeing and saying that their truck does the same.

It can be maddening. When it's time to buy a new truck, I'm going to go test drive the new Tacomas. If the latest trucks out still do the same, I'll look at something else. I won't buy an automatic, but there's no point in knowingly buying a truck that acts like this.

Basically all new vehicles are DBW, it's pretty hard to avoid...

I'm looking for a conversion kit to a manual throttle control. I really hate the electronic throttle for all of the above stated reasons. I basically had to change my driving style to adapt to this truck. The other irritating "feature", it the computer likes to "hunt" when you feather the clutch. My wife thinks that I'm causing it, but never had the issue in a manual throttled vehicle.

teach yourself how to drive it

you may need to do things differently and switch up your fine foot control and
timing. but there is no design flaw with the truck, you have to adapt to it, like
    anything else.

I have, but I still think that my physical throttle control is much better than some computer with a limited sample rate.

Mine does the same thing you get used to it I no longer even notice it. It is emission related device controlled by the ECU if you defeat it you will end up with engine codes it may even drive it into limp mode.

I do agree. my cable operated 4runner has one electronic part... the TPS sensor. with a fresh TPS sensor I have ultra-fine throttle control on that thing. Tacoma is not bad, but the 4runner is better

The Tacoma is better than my wifes '05 Corrola xrs, and yes, I'm used to it, but I would still like to change iot now that it's paid for and the warranty is up.

After decades of being able to control my throttle within 100 RPM it's a bit annoying to have my pedal divided into 4 levels of input. It doesn't affect my personal driving style that much but this seems a terrible thing to do to serious off-roaders whom need absolute control when crawling. I know this is a zombie thread but this is the only thing that bothers me about my truck so far. Anyone find this makes delicate crawling more difficult?

I don't like that the Ron's are kept up for emissions. That make precision shifting all but impossible. I used to road race and am very adapt at shifting and I hate throttle by wire.

    True,
Precision shifting is impossible. You either learn to slow down your shifts to a plodding pace, or live with disappointment.
