Maybe I'm a sociopathic monster, but I generally don't have any emotional response to deaths, major injuries, etc. If I can be honest, really I'm more often "annoyed" with those calls than anything, because of the time investment and the paperwork that invariably accompanies them.

I'm sure there was a time I gave a shit, but I can't remember when that was.

I guess you do this long enough, you pretty much have seen it all and nothing really is remarkable any more.

It's easier to just say "posi." Whether you're into Ford, GM, or MOPAR, they call it "posi." Also, a lot of people would say that true posi rear ends haven't made in like 30 years.

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST. THIS IS NOT WHAT I WOULD CONsiDER A "DRUNK GRANDPA" STORY:
First of all, let me say that I have matured greatly in the almost four years since this has happened, and after a well-publicized rant here on TW I truly saw the light and realized that what happened was for the best. I would also like to say that I have a bit of OCD, and the traits of Asperger's magnify this. As such, I can dwell on things for months or even years. This is the only thing from my one and only encounter with police where I was considered a potential suspect that still really bothers me.

Someone called the cops on me taking pictures in Doylestown back in March 2013, and I got questioned by the side of the road for 20 minutes. When 4 officers showed up for what was basically a report of a guy with a camera, I was a bit freaked out. The police were VERY professional and nothing happened. Now just about every cop in Doylestown knows who I am, what I do, and what I am interested in. They know what I look like and what my truck looks like. Basically, I can walk around Doylestown taking pictures and local law enforcement realizes I'm harmless.

After I handed over my driver's license and the sergeant who initially responded, he asked the usual stuff like "Is this your current address?" Totally normal. It was 2013 and I had been living at the address listed on my license since September 2007. I had absolutely nothing to hide. I got asked this same question two or three times by like three different cops, and that really annoyed me, but when I told my dad about the encounter, he said it is a normal police tactic and they were trying to see if changed my story. Aggravating but not big deal.

The one thing that really irks me even 4 years later is this, and this is what I have a question about...

I was specifically asked if the address on my license was my parents' house, or if I lived in my own. I cooperated and answered truthfully, saying that I lived with my parents, but long after I got over the initial shock of my the whole thing, that one little detail bugged me. That night, both of my parents told me that this was probably another profiling technique to assess who I was. Specifically my parents said that a young person who lived with their parents was less likely to be burglarizing houses, while someone who either lived on their own or had their parents' address on their license had a less structured life and was more likely to be the heroin-addicted burglar they were looking for.

That revelation pissed me off even more. I felt that it was honestly nobody's business what my current living situation, and that one's living situation should not be lumped into a profile. It didn't matter who the house at the address listed on my license belonged to who, who I lived there with, or if I even lived there with anybody at all. I remember that conversation perfectly too, and I asked my dad "Are they going to ask me about my credit rating next? How about my sex life? My level of college education maybe?" And then I also asked, "So if I'm a drifter or a homeless guy that automatically makes me guilty?"

Another theory of my dad's was this, and it made me feel a lot better. At the time, my parents owned a $400K townhouse in what many would consider a very affluent area. That house was like 5 to 7 minutes from Doylestown, though in a different jurisdiction than Doylestown with it's own department, but cops from neighboring jurisdictions regularly backed each other up or simply parked alongside each other in parking lots to chat when there were no calls. My dad believed it was possible that the officer probably knew the address on my license was in a very nice neighborhood as a result of possibly backing up an officer and was curious to know if at less than 24 years old, I was some young self-made millionaire entrepreneur who'd bought his own place or if I did actually live with my parents.

My aunt's new husband is a veteran who just got promoted to lieutenant and has been with the same department in the same New Jersey town since like 1993. If more people in law enforcement were like him, this country would be a much better place. As such, he has always been my go-to person when I have "How would you handle it?" questions about police procedures. That was before I joined TW, and before I had the opportunity to talk to Tacoma-owning law enforcement officers from all over North America. I still ask my new uncle stuff about police procedure, and in fact his response to the question in this post was pretty much the same as my parents' response.

A lot of my friends and random people I've told this story think the police did everything right, and I did everything right as well, but who I lived with or the status of living situation was nobody's business, not even the police.

So, what do you guys think? If anybody would like a full description of the whole incident I will happily tell them upon request. I would love to tell the story to someone who actually works in law enforcement who is not a family member and see what they think.

    Basically my questions are:
Were my parents right about why the police asked me who I lived with?
Would you have done the same thing?

EVEN POLICE WILL ADMIT THAT NOBODY LIKES TO BE STOPPED BY THE POLICE, BUT ONE COP WHO WAS SIMPLY DOING HIS JOB PROBABLY SAVED MY FRIENDS LIFE...

This happened almost 8 years ago and I just suddenly and randomly remembered it. With all the shit police are going through these days, we tend to forget that most officers are good people who actually know how to protect, serve, and just in general do their jobs properly.

NOTE: Not even a month before this incident happened, my friend did 120 MPH on a stretch of road with a 55 MPH speed limit, with me in the car. Another time before he finally got pulled over, he took a 25 MPH curve at 80 MPH IN THE RAIN.

What my friend did was far beyond "speeding," and I believe 100% that if he hadn't gotten pulled over that day, he would have caused such a bad accident that totaling his expensive new car or even getting his license revoked would have been the least of his problems. At those speeds, he probably would have killed himself or ended up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life if he didn't kill or seriously injure someone else.

YES, I TRULY BELIEVE THAT ORDINARY PATROLMAN SAVED MY FRIEND'S LIFE

I did not get my driver's license until I was 22. I have a lot of friends, both with Asperger's Syndrome and without. Only one of my close "inner circle" friends, a guy without AS, got his license when he was 16. A few of my friends, none of whom have AS, got their licenses at 17. The rest, both AS and non-AS, got their licenses between the ages of 18 and 24.

    THE SHORT STORY:
This happened back in like June 2009, before I even had my learner's permit...
One of my friends who got his license at 17 had very wealthy parents who bought him a brand new Volkswagen GTI when he still had his learner's permit. Both us had birthdays in March and this in June, so I was 20 and he was 18 at this point. Long story short, you had 2 young guys in a car. The driver of the car with a valid license who did not have AS had no idea where his registration and proof of insurance were when asked for them by the officer who pulled him over for reckless driving. His passenger with Asperger's and NO license correctly guessed where his paperwork was and handed it to the officer! Not only that, immediately after stopping but before the cop approached his car, my friend was freaking out. What do you think I told him? "Just put both hands on the steering wheel, don't make any sudden movements, and remain calm." He listened to me, and big surprise (NOT), the cop actually wrote him a ticket for a reduced charge! The offense for which my friend was pulled over would have resulted not just in a larger fine than he got but the MANDATORY suspension of his driver's license for 90 days. He had been pulled for reckless driving, and his license would have been suspended because he was a new driver and still had a restricted/junior license.

I forget what the reduced charge was, but it got him a $109 ticket that his parents paid for and 3 points on his license.

    THE LONG STORY:
One summer evening after a fun afternoon of playing video games at my house, his parents called him and said I could come to back to their house an have dinner with them. My parents said they would have no problem We hopped in the GTI and began the roughly 10 to 15 minute drive to his house.

Buying your 18-year old son a turbocharged German hatchback as his first car is rarely if ever a good idea.

We were on York Road in Buckingham Township, and not 5 minutes after we left my house, my friend decided to start weaving in and out of traffic. He honestly scared the shit out of me, and right before the cop got behind us I was swearing at him and demanding that he slow down. Unbeknownst to us, there were some young guys in a Scion TC in the next lane, who the cop saw but we didn't. As soon as the the lights and siren came on, the kids in the Scion started pointing and laughing. Again, the cop saw this but somehow we did not. My friend pulled into a gas station, and asking for my friend's license was not first thing the cop did. He walked up to the car and angrily demanded to know if we had been street racing. My friend and I said in unison "No Officer." The cop thought we knew the guys in the Scion we hadn't seen, and luckily he did believe us. It was just very inconvenient timing. What happened after it was established we had not been street racing is mentioned in the first part of the post...

My friend thought the cop was a prick (his exact words) and would bitch about the experience for years after it happened.

Once in 2013, after my photography-related incident with police, and by which time I'd had my license for 2 years, he finally pushed me too far...

We were in his basement playing video games, and I jumped up and started screaming at him. Something like... "I got stopped by the cops for taking pictures on a public street. I wasn't even driving! You were driving like an idiot and are lucky you just got pulled over. If either one of us has any right to be mad at the cops for
simply doing their jobs, it's me, and I'm mad, so just learn from your mistake and shut up!"

That shut him right up, and you know what else? My friend must have subconsciously learned his lesson because despite 4 years of bitching, he has never been pulled over since then aside from another ticket for failure to signal and is now a much better driver.

I never fear getting pulled over... I carry concealed, have insurance, current license, current tags, no warrants and AMAZINGLY have no problems with law enforcement. I don't break laws, don't drive drunk, and AMAZINGLY don't have problems. I have a lot of respect for law enforcement. I always wave to them when I pass. As stated above, get over it. There are real criminals and real crime out there. Either you are the problem or the solution. There is no way that I would do there job for what they get paid much less the total disrespect that America is showing them. I always love to see the people who cause the problems crying that the cops won't help them when they are in need!

You seem like a friend of mine that dwells on things for far too long. It actually gets tiring after a while. That situation your describing seems to be a non-issue in my book.
