And just think, steel bumpers make for easier, if not more fun, parallel parking.

 

I've had a few people give up trying to parallel park in front of my truck because they were afraid of hitting my bumper. Armour for protection while parked as well!

 

That's why I'm super excited to get steel bumpers all around and sliders. All that armor for the stop and shop parking lot!

 

So do I. I love the thing:



In the winter my trans temp usually stays under 130°. In the summer, I've seen as high as 215° towing 5000 lbs up hill on a warmer day. Otherwise, it ordinarily stays about 160°.

 

Same here on all things actually. Haven't really towed anything crazy heavy yet to make it go that high.

 

I have a theory that it would stay even cooler if the transmission cooler was moved up a little so it's not partially blocked by the bumper. Haven't bothered to try it, though.

 

Never thought about that, but makes sense. It is kinda blocked in a way... not "in the open" to be able to get more air to/through it.

I did mine that way b/c I don't want to lose the ability to use it as a reader easily on someone else's vehicle. Takes 30 seconds to remove it.

You actually don't want the trans too cool or the fluid doesn't lubricate like it should. There's an ideal operating temp that it needs to be which the factory cooler does. Some aftermarket coolers actually can keep it from warming up to operating temp in the winter cause they don't have a t-stat and are constantly running.

 

Instead of getting an Ultra Gauge, I used an old Android phone

Interesting. My engine never stays at its full operating temperature when it's cold out (drops to 160-170° going down every hill), so I could see the transmission having potential to do the same thing.

 

I agree, stupid concept, I can't believe that shit actually flies. You can't save a spot any other time of the year, I don't get why it's all of the sudden ok in the winter.

Not sure about the Tacoma, but my Ford will not send fluid through the cooler until it reaches a certain temperature. Obviously, when it's cold out it takes longer to get to that temperature, but once it's there, it stays pretty consistent. Your theory may hold true if you're towing something heavy where the truck was having an issue keeping the transmission temps down, then better airflow would help.

 

Mine's the same. Takes it a while to warm up to operating temperature when it's cold out, but once it does it stays dead stable at that temp.

 

I park in East Boston for work, mostly resident parking around there but I know a few places you can park for free all day. I parked in an open spot on Tuesady, and then on Wednesday that same spot was all of sudden "Saved" with a cone. That person didn't even shovel out the spot and thought they could claim it. smh

Granted, when we had a real bad winter I was saving my spot because I had to dig it out of 8' of snow like every other day and there was literally no where else to park if I didn't save it. I also lived in Eastie at the time.

 

Very similar to my method but the bottom rests on the column, so you can still see the odometer and blinkers

 

I can see the blinkers. The odometer I can see if I move down a bit.
