Cold air intake

I am interested, how come you are selling it?

 

Selling my Tacoma, buying a 2016 4Runner and unfortunately it won't transfer over.

 

Is the drop in filter dry? if so what Part # tks

 

Nope, OEM TRD filter is an oiled filter. Nothing wrong with an oiled filter if you know what you're doing and don't over oil it. PTR03-34140

deciding between the K&N 63 and the blackhawk 71...only difference really besides color I can notice is that the 63 is oiled and the blackhawk is dry.

Any major difference between oiled vs dry besides when you maintain at 100K miles? I heard that the oiled may trip the CEL?

 

I put the TRD cai on my '17 Off-Road and am actually putting on the cat back exhaust today. As far as performance gains, they're nominal but still noticeable. You get a nice rumble with the intake over 3500 rpm when you're hard on it, but no noticeable sound change other than that. My fuel economy has actually gotten almost 10% better though. There's a couple sound bites on Youtube of a '16 with the intake and exhaust done and the TRD is by far the best sounding exhaust mod I've heard so far. Guess I'll find out this afternoon.

I have tried a few different types of "cold air intakes" on more than a few different vehicles. IMO, DONT DO IT! Wast of money. No significant HP increase ever! The only thing that changes is the the sound because the resonator is eliminated on the after market intake systems. Buy a drop in filter and you will be better off.
Not saying that a drop in will give you any HP gain. Just easier to clean when its dirty instead of buying new everytime. I clean my filter every other oil change (10K miles).

 

No, those performance gains are not noticeable. You are noticing the sound and feeling' gains' in your pants

Dude, I've been a mechanic for over 30 years, and know my vehicles better than anybody. Your opinion is just that, your opinion... Don't have to be a dick about it.

 

it is not a high and mighty attitude, it is just slapping facts down because the argument of 'cold air intakes' is endless.

unless you are also -removing the toyota engine control computer and installing your own- there are no gains
from f**king with the intake, except noise and -imagined- power

you may change throttle response curve somewhat... but you cannot override the ECU and cannot add power
with intake mods alone. you have to change a whole load of engine parameters


if noise is what you want, go for it. you'll get noise.

 

Obviously the computer in the truck is smarter than you seem to think you are... Make an engine breathe better and you will improve performance hands down, no questions asked. You can spout whatever rhetoric you like, but facts are facts. Not going to get into a pissing match with you over it, but I know what kind of throttle response I had before adding the parts, and I know how it's performing after the mods. I've done the same thing with other trucks I've had, dyno'd before and after, and there are documented gains. No, they're not huge, but I'm not building a race car. I'm content with that, regardless of whatever you feel like spewing out.

 

I didnt read through all 50+ pages but untill someone slaps it on a dyno there will always be both sides arguing.

 

I don't have access to the dyno from my old shop anymore, but I did for my last 3 trucks, and on average with a combo of intake and exhaust done I was averaging 8-13 hp gains. Unfortunately I couldn't dyno the Taco before, but I may try to find one to see what it's putting out now.

 

Its been done with all but 3rd gens so far.
