The truck is absolutely underpowered and the transmission makes it worse. Auto engines are not supposed to run at high HP except in extreme conditions. We drive it around mostly empty I am guessing, one person and no gear. Ask it to pull any load, fill it up with people and stuff or even ask it to quickly accelerate and it is at max torque, 4500 RPM. You are not yet at max HP being red line but not far from it when you look at a chart. My point is there is no more power left and your nearing 100% of the power the engine can provide for basic designed uses. An engine with another 35-50HP would make a huge difference.

To answer another question, My wife's car is a 3.5 and 300HP.

I realize that theirs a lot of powerful 6 cylinders out their, take the Nissan GT-R for example... but those are all expensive as hell. I was just saying if this guys primarily focused on power maybe a Toyota with a 6 cylinder wasn't the best choice

That's exactly what I experienced on my test drive! That and the dead response on take off is the reason I went with a gen2.

Is this truck idling at 1800 rpm? Seems kind of high... or he wasn't at rest.

First, I don't believe you getting "beat off the line" by a prius. 0-60 for the Tacoma is 7.9 seconds, for the Prius it's 9.4.

Second, this isn't a drag truck. And if you are only getting 16, you drive with a heavy foot. I'm averaging nearly 20 in strictly city driving. Driving isn't a race to the next stop light. Slow life down a little and MPG will go up and the "lack of power" won't be an issue anymore.

A prius pulled away off the line and up to about 40mph. and ill drive how i enjoy driving, and you can drive how you like. lack of power is an issue i have with this truck, if you are happy then thats great for you. if i could afford to trade this in with almost 38000 miles after 15 months of ownership i would, but i cant, so ill hope for a tuner to come out to help with what i find fault with.

My company truck is a Dodge that gets 23 on the highway. It has a HiMI 5.7 8 speed auto and will spin the tires for a country mile with the traction control off. If you want MPG's that's where I tell my friends to go- if they like big trucks. The company has about 500 mation wide, all Hemis very reliable. Did I mention I hate to drive the big thing.

I think the Hemi's may have Cylinder Deactivation to improve highway MPGs.

The ford coyote 5.0 in my 4x4 DCSB work truck gets 18mpg in heavy mountainous driving, mid 20s across the valley. Tons of low end torque but likes to wind out with a flat top end. Almost the opposite of my Tacoma. I considered a ford truck but couldn't go wrong with Toyota.

I traded my 2012 Ram with Hemi in on the turd i'm driving now. I'm getting 2-3 mpg better with the Toyota. Let's just say if i knew what I know now I'd still be driving the Ram.

Off the line and quarter mile are two different things. The gen 2 beats the gen3 off the line (lets say the first 100yds) but the gen 3 , because of its higher hp, will catch up and pass the gen 2. Everyone has different needs and desires. Over the past years a lot of Tacoma owners complained about the lack of power and poor mileage. Looks like Toyota was listening because we got just that.
Unfortunately some of us were quite happy with the way it was.

I will put the trans in "S" and bump up to "6" before starting off. Goes through the gears the way I want it to. My only gripe, so far (2200mi) is the lack of torque at 50-70mph

I just posted this on the tranny fluid change thread but could be applicable here. If you get get low Mpg (or under power), check the tranny fluid level.

I just bought a used 2016 TRD sport and love the truck. I noticed that I'm getting low mpg(15-16) and ever slight delay in engagement. The engagement wasn't as bad as some people describe. Mine was a fraction of a sec delay when going into D compared to other cars (I wouldn't have suspected anything wrong with tranny but the low mpg was troubling to me). Followed the direction on tranny fluid thread (what a pain) and add Valvoline max life, about 0.5-1 quart.
Almost immediately, I can tell the tranny is shifting smoothly and no delays. I'm getting 18-19mpg now which is normal.
    Thanks to all you guys.
