today a guy came up to me by my truck and started asking questions.

he has an ARB front bumper off a '12 if anyone is in the market. he asking 400$, not sure if thats a good price or not. He said it came off a pavement princess, never been offroad. Black bumper. if anyone is interested, let me know and Ill give you his info. If it doesnt sell before the 4x4 swap at pullywop fairground March 11 (I think he said) then he was taking it there.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on a winch and have a few questions that I couldn't find any answers too.

Looking at a Warn 10s or 12s the only differences besides the line pull rating is:
    1) Gear ratio 12s-162:1 and 10s-216:1 How significant of a difference will that make?
    2)Line length 12s-80' 3/8" and 10s 100' 3/8"

I also have an aluminum bumper and couldn't find anything rating wise for winching beyond sending a message to pelfreybilt which is my next step.

Their bumpers are really well made and reinforced.
That being said will you ever be winching anything over 10k pounds? If so you'll do more damage than good. Probably bending your frame etc.. Plus you can always use a snatch block with the 10s to up the power. Also the extra 20ft it comes with is very nice.

Yeah, been checking salvage yards for a long time, too. They're not very common for sale, and when you find them they are typically non-running or have 300k+ in a 1/1.5/2 ton work truck. Slim pickings. Was just trying to broaden up the search network to cut down on time and find a better condition engine.

I'm not so much worried about the welding as I am the work as a whole. Angles need to be dead-on, straight and strong, as this thing will be on trails and the highway. I'd be happy with most projects, but not something so critical. And with work, I just can't afford the time. Appreciate the help though, Nick!

Yeah true. Was thinking the longer line and a snatch block was a better option. Thanks.

Not talking trash about Warn, but I would bet you can find a winch that is just as effective and reliable but less expensive.
I haven't tried one, but consider Tuff Stuff. They have a 10k with synthetic line for under $500 here.

A winch is something I wouldn't skimp out on... Could be the difference between hiking out/sleeping in your truck versus sleeping in your bed at home.

I agree. I have looked around but I like the fact that its an American founded company and that you can rebuild them. They also make quad winches and I like to be all matchy matchy because I'm weird like that.

Good luck on the engine! I know nothing about the Isuzu 4BD1T so cant help much. 300k on a diesels to bad though. Just have it rebuilt maybe? Or maybe go with a different diesel?

It shouldnt be hard work for someone who has half a brain. Like you mentioned its just a matter of finding someone willing to do the work. Theres quite a few guys who do axle swaps from FJ60's to Fj40's and have to extend (or shorten i forget...its early!) and do it in their home garages. Is a different axle an option?

Have you tried calling Northridge 4x4? I wouldnt have them do the work but they might be able to point you to someone who can. Torfab is another shop. Torfab does mostly landcruisers and FJ but Im pretty sure he has done axle swaps on them so he might be able to point ya towards someone as well.

More importantly....what project is this for :)

Smittybilt X20 winches. The only complaint I've ever heard is that the battery died in the controller and it had to be used plugged in. I've heard just as many stories about warn winches failing as anything.

The things that are important are winch speed and waterproofing, and the solenoid has multiple mounting options.

I've stalled out my 12k winch with only 1 tire left on the ground. The front of the truck can take it.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll find some place that can do it right. I actually haven't called Northridge yet. Always liked them but never had any work done there. I'll give them a call.

Depending on the actual condition of the engine, a full rebuild may be necessary. You know how projects go though... would love to avoid that extra cost, if possible.

The project is my old '84 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler. Alaska USPS RHD variant with the Australian steel removable top. Bone stock. Long-term project... I'm fairly certain every single piece is getting fixed or replaced with something entirely different.
