I didn't like stop what I was doing to clean my truck... I'd just come back from running errands, I had empty bottles in the truck, and I tossed them in the dumpster on my way in. If that woman hadn't seen me there wouldn't have been a problem... I explained the whole situation to the owner and the general manager and they took my side...

 

Go to a strip club... I know from experience that even at the strict "no-touching" places, the girls will break the rules if you tip enough or even if they just like you...

In 2014, I told a seasoned police officer by the name of David Carlen about the guy who for lack of a better term went batshit crazy on me for taking pictures of his Ford Explorer and made me delete every single picture while he watched. It is worth noting that Officer David Carlen is the older brother of Sergeant Lance Carlen, the patrol supervisor who stopped and questioned me for taking pictures in public back in 2013. David knew about this incident...

His response is proof that cops are in fact human beings: He said that I did nothing wrong and the guy who owned the Explorer was a douchebag.

If I had to guess, I'd say that repairs to the bathrooms at the bar where I work cost more than the electric bill in the summer, even when it's a busy Friday or Saturday night in the middle of a record heat wave, and body heat generated by the insane amount of customers crammed into the venue overpowers the central A/C.

It seems like every other week, drunk people manage to break something in the bathroom. After Thanksgiving Eve, the bathrooms may as well be totally gutted and renovated...

Most recently at my bar, a stainless steel toilet paper dispenser that was BOLTED to the concrete wall got ripped out. This happened on a busy weekend, and nobody knew it happened until the following Monday when I found it while cleaning the bathroom. I don't think it was a malicious act of vandalism, but rather a large drunk guy leaning on something that every sober person knows you don't lean on. Plastic toilet seats have been completely splintered, doors to stalls have been ripped of the hinges, and soap dispensers have been ripped of the wall.

 

This was the original post from a thread called "If a patron did this twice at a bar, a lifetime ban would not be out of the question...", which I originally posted in "Jobs & Careers".

I'm talking about something unexpected that happened at the bar where I work not once but twice...

The central A/C couldn't keep up with the combination of a packed house and record heat, froze solid, and then flooded the area around the stage DURING a packed show... TWICE! I'm pretty sure that on one occasion the band playing was a national act. People were inevitably annoyed, but the doors at each end of the venue were opened up to create a cross breeze, the show went on, and everyone had a great time anyway... Believe it or not, if it's less than about 80°F outside and/or not humid, opening the doors to get a breeze often works better than running the A/C!

Obviously a person is not an air-conditioner, but if somebody disrupted a show during a packed performance they would be kicked out for the evening at bare minimum. If the same person did it twice, they would probably be banned for life...

Now that I'm in charge of basic A/C maintenance and one of my jobs is to thoroughly inspect the system and notify my boss if something is wrong, I can proudly say nothing like this has happened since...

 

Did you check the refrigerant?

The current system is a split-system so retrofitting for a package unit probably wouldn't be worth it...

Also, I've got a funny story. We tried FOR YEARS to figure out why the damn thing kept freezing. My boss and the owner of the bar thought the filters weren't being changed often enough, so they put me in charge of that because they knew I wouldn't forget. The sound guy's theory was that employees were turning the thermostat down way too low, and the unit would run and run until froze. This was partially true. This A/C ran when it was below 40°F without people knowing, and anyone who knows anything about HVAC knows that it is a bad idea to run an A/C unit when it's below 50°F without a low-ambient kit, but even that wasn't the problem. The sound guy even vacuumed out the return air duct.

The problem was so obvious that none of us could believe it took so long to find it, and even with an A/C tech there on the day the problem was discovered, I was the one who came up with the theory!

 

Back when the venue opened, a custom curtain was installed behind the stage, and this curtain had a mesh cutout for the return air duct so it wouldn't be blocked. Having that mesh was pushing it, and then on the day the tech was finally called, I inspected the curtain closer. My theory is that every once in a while a guitar player would unwittingly bump the curtain; As a result, sometimes but not always the solid part of the curtain would get sucked up against the return vent and completely block the air flow. The venue part of Puck is located in the basement of an old bank that was built in 1929, and it obviously did not have central air, so the ductwork was designed in the interest of keeping the historical feel rather than maximum efficiency. System consists of a long metal duct hanging from the ceiling along one side of the venue with maybe half a dozen vents, and then the only return air vent is one big rectangle behind the stage. Actually it's more like two vents in one because there are two 12x20 filters inside it.

Anyway, if the blockage was noticed right away, no harm done. However, at almost 2am or later, the last thing musicians and bartenders are thinking about is the A/C when they just want to get to sleep. The blockage would thus go unnoticed and the system would run until froze. The A/C tech tested my theory by placing a thermometer by the outflow duct and blocking the return duct with the curtain, and the temperature dropped by about ten degrees in a matter of minutes. The tech called my boss over, did the experiment for her, and it was agreed that I'd probably solved the problem. The mesh part of the curtain was cut away and the solid part was gorilla-taped into place so it wouldn't end up blocking the duct. Haven't had a problem since!

 

That sounds like a lot of work for one air handler. Ive been in the trade 4 years and most bar or venues around here

have a package unit then a split system for the "office" areas

All HVAC equipment was installed when the venue opened in 2005-2006 and none has been replaced as of February 2017:

York Stellar Series 5-ton/60,000 BTU heat pump and matched air handler for basement/venue

American Standard Allegiance 13 heat pump (I think it's 2.5 or 3 tons) and matched air handler for the 2nd floor space used for private parties and extraordinarily busy nights

Mitsubishi Mr. Slim 4-ton ductless mini-split heat pump for prep kitchen in the venue (this unit is actually powerful enough that it takes quite a bit of the load off of the aforementioned York system)

The rest of the building is separate from Puck and rented out by another company. This space is heated and cooled by a bunch of Trane gas-packs up on the roof that are probably close in size to my Tacoma.

Ever since I discovered the problem with the blocked return air vent, the performance of the venue system has improved almost 100%. It only really struggles on a busy night when it's really hot, and even then nobody complains so it does it's job...

 

You could also add another return depending on the building

 

A lot of the really old buildings in Doylestown don't even have central air! Just window units. On the buildings that do have central air, the primary goal is to just make it work, with little or no thought given efficiency or functionality. At least the installers gave some thought to maximizing the service life and making access for techs as easy possible in the event of a breakdown...

 

Like I said, built in 1929, I think they did their best. I'm NOT just saying this because I work at Puck, but compared to most other commercial properties in Doylestown, they did a decent job installing the HVAC stuff.

 

I love Doylestown and the people live there, but more problems arise the further we get into the 21st century:

Reason #1: Old homes with little or no historic value are being bulldozed and very expensive, well-built custom homes are going up in their place. This in itself obviously isn't a problem, but a lot of times a developer will buy a huge lot with one house on it, then tear down that single house and subdivide the lot for 2, 3, or even 4 houses. Doylestown is already crowded enough.
