What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I keep trying to find Tundra brake calipers with a banjo bolt and a tundra rear without ABS in the yards. ABS keeps screwing me on both counts.

 

I'm not sure if Tundras were ever produced without ABS now that I think about it.

 

I have one sitting in the driveway lol. Otherwise I'd think the same thing haha

Excuse my ignorance but whats the difference between abs and no abs on the axle?

 

I've debated haha. I keep forgetting to check to see if the axles different or if it just has a block off plate like my Tacoma.

 

Don't know for sure but I was told the ABS one is necked down to accept the the ring sensor thing. But I'm not 100% on that.

I'd just rather not have to deal with any idiosyncrasies of an ABS axle like I have on my Tacoma...which doesn't have ABS but has an ABS axle with block off plates and gear

 

Lol yea makes sense, if you're in no rush might as well do it right the first time

 

Just priced out Brembo rotors and Akebono pads and it comes to $142.77 for anyone that's curious. Anyone know of stock brakes (not interested in Tundy mod) from quality manufacturers that are any cheaper?

 

You can do the tundra brake mod easily under $350. I did. No ABS here..

 

As for progress today, swapped rear tires and loaded it up on the trailer. Not the easiest to get up the ramp with bald mini tires and 2wd LOL. Then put it back in the driveway. Trailer conveniently inverted a shackle so fixed that. Then dropped the gas tank and driveshaft in record time.

Had to remove the new crossmember because it was right where the new spring mounts needed to go. Derp

 

That's about were I'm at 350 got the calipers of a 2006 tundra for 50 bucks new roters pads good to go now.

 

Yeah you can. I went a more expensive route. A lot more expensive haha. $200 for rotors and $200 for calipers. If you wanna go "cheap" go the Amazon kit plus the wheelers lines like @Blackdawg did. I just wanted the slotted rotors

 

Yea i don't get why you'd want slotted rotors. All they do is eat your pads faster. No way in hell you're using the truck in a way that you'd benefit from the "cooling" factor of slotted and drilled rotters. I'll take the more surface area for better stopping power and longer pad life.

I will say yours look cool though.

Im going to replace my rotors when the time comes with OEM rotors and Pads.

 

I only drive her once every two weeks now. She was acid washed today, she looks as if I just got her from the car lot.

 

I think that was what I did. The past week or so I had the tendency to order things while drinking and it didn't help that the slotted rotors looked cool as hell but we'll see. It's a lot spongier than I thought. But it slows down a lot faster

You thinking the early (95-97) dual diaphragm one is better suited

 

wrong.

The dual diaphram is from 95-00 and is NOT better suited for it.

 

Ah, well it certainly makes for minimal stopping effort on my truck, but truth be told when my brakes aren't worn out I can't see any reason to do the Tundy mod.
