They aren't much heavier than a Tacoma.

    17 TRD OR 4wd 3.5L CCSB: 4480lb
    17 Lariat 4wd 3.5L EB CCSB: 4940lb

If I was buying a new truck today it might be a 5.0L Super cab 4wd in black with a few options.

I have a friend that has more money than God himself. He doesn't keep his trucks much longer than 80K miles just because he can buy a new one whenever he wants. He always buys the "best" (defined to him as performance) because he owns a big boat and is quite narcissistic. We go on multi-state fishing trips with his truck because it is full size and there are 4 of us. I usually drive up and back 400 miles each way and he drives all over once we get there. I've driven his 3 Rams (2 have been turbo diesels) & 3 Chevys. Those Cummins get up and going pretty well. I actually would buy a Ford if I was in the full-size market. He and I have friendly arguments over brands. Finally last year he bought his first Ford which was a 3.5 F-150 King Ranch with everything on it. Since he only keeps his trucks maybe 3 years he decided to give the Ford a try. Holy crap. When I drove the F-150 last fall I was way impressed. You have all the power you need to pass semis on hills. With that much power out of a 3.5 I have to think it won't last long. Rings, valve seats, bearings have to have more stress on them. We'll see in a few years how many are still on the road with the original turbo and engine.

I'm not rich and so I need long term reliability over anything else. I'd buy the ecoboost if money wasn't an issue but I'll stick with the Tacoma since I need it to last 10+ years.

I prefer the styling of the GMC and Silverado over the F150 but the powertrain of the F150 is tempting particularly given the MPG and power performance numbers. Really feel the Tacoma should have something like the 2.7 Turbo in it.

    Go drive a 2017 F150 (3.5 EB and 10 speed automatic)

    Return with your assessment.

If I were looking for a full size it's what I would have.

It's just too big for what I want right now.

Turbos are scary to me, but a lot of that may be because in the Subaru world they had some that were reliability nightmares.

That said, I have a Volvo XC70 with a low pressure turbo (on a 2.5L Inline 5). The car is not fast, but gives the illusion that it is because of the torque the turbo generates down low. Having ~240 lb ft available barely off idle is pretty nice.

Yeah had a buddy with a mid to late 90s RX7 and turbo housing fractured on him. Cost thousands to replace and repair but know others who have got 100s of thousands of miles with no issues on fleet f150s with the 2.7s

Ceramic ball bearing turbos. They'll last awhile.

"Turbo Rx-7" and "reliability" are never mentioned in the same sentence, unless the word "poor" is somewhere between them.

I used to have a highly modified Rx-7 turbo.

It was like having a really hot bad girlfriend.

On days when it ran right, it was the most awesome thing ever and I loved it and had eyes for no other and would never dream of anything else since it was exactly what I had been looking for my whole life...

The next day it was a spiteful bitch that I wanted to push off a cliff somewhere.

Tests on utube show the 2.7 as faster than the 3.5 ecos, because of rearend gearing in 1/4 mile .

    It's the difference between a 3.5 and a real 3.5.

I owned a 3.5 TT for almost a year, there was hardly a truck that beat me off the line or could pass me

I don't know. It was some old grandpa looking guy. I didn't want to get stuck behind him so I put the pedal to the floor and had ECT turned on to quickly get in front of him. I swear I saw him look over and smile, flashed his gold tooth at us and with a wink he was 50 yards ahead of me. I feel like I might as well go get the vasectomy now.

Are Tt Ford motors proven to be as reliable as TT Toyota motors of the past ?
