Illuminated Ignition Ring Mod

The daunting part would be taking the dash apart if you have never done this before. The wiring is a breeze. I had trouble with the pins going into the connector, (the problem had to be me) so I just spliced the wires in.
I'm comfortable with splicing in wires. The wire I'm splicing into I remove about 1/2 inch of the insulation then with a small pick I separate the strands of wire and insert the new wire. The strands from both wires are now tied together that makes a tight connection. Then I wrap tape around the splice. I find this works better for me that using connectors.

 

This mod is well worth any effort it takes to get done. Some get the mod done in less than a hour and some like me it takes longer. Glad I did it.

X2 steering column cover took a while for me to remove, took my time and not break anything. Everything else should be a breeze

 

This never concerned me until I drove my wife's 4Runner to take the family to supper tonight and I saw that hers had it from the factory. The game of one-upmanship will begin shortly.

Yup, my fiance Rav4 has it. It really is the little things in life. Maybe one day I can tackle this mod.

 

Swap her ignition ring for yours. She probably wouldn't even notice.

Picked up a used ignition assembly from a 2011 Camry and cut the price of this mod in half. Great write-up on the process also.

I bought extra connectors from Mouser (the ones that get added to the transponder electrical connector). Happy to share as I don't need this many extras. I'll give away two sets of 6 connectors. Only thing I ask is that you mail me an envelope with postage (and padded, if you're worried about that). First two people who PM me get this deal.

 

Wow, I really want to do this now! I hate trying to put the key in at night lol. Has anyone swapped the amber LED for white? I want it to match all my other switches that I have already swapped

My contribution to this thread as I try to find myself an amplifier ring. Did a google search and here are the toyota models with years that use the white amplifier part #89783-06021;

 

I thought it was kind of weird my SR5 1st gen had a lighted ring and my SR5 2nd gen didn't.

Lol, . Hey, I tried. I was just skimming by the time I was 8 pages in .

 

Just scored a camry ignition assembly off ebay. Was $41 and they accepted my best offer of $30 . Hope to install it next weekend.
