    I have a 2016 DC with the regular audio system and the nice head unit. Looking for something I could just direct install using stock speaker wire, etc ... 'plug and play'

    I was thinking the current ones I have sound great, but apparently there are way better options out there. Interested to hear what I could upgrade to, as I love loud music lol

    I would suggest going thru taco tunes. There's a lot of taco tunes haters out there but my experience with them was great. I bought image dynamics 6.5" components and coaxials from them with speaker brackets and harnesses and put a four channel amp on them and they sound great. Also got a 10" image dynamics sub and box from them too. Good thing is they do strictly Toyota stuff so it's all plug and play and really easy to install.

    I bought some Kicker 6x9's for the front and 6" for the rear from Best Buy, as they were on huge sale. Also got the speaker wiring harness after arguing with the them about the cheaper price on Amazon (they will price match). Then got some speaker adapters from Amazon as they were WAY cheaper than anywhere else.

    Any recommendations for behind the drivers side of the back seat?

    I got infinity reference 6.5 components for the front, still have oem rears for now, i might put my 6.5s in back and get 6x9s up front. I made my own adapters ,ill probably remake with a higher quality wood or get Amazon plastic ones soon

    Replacing the stock speakers alone will sound worst than stock.
    I replaced all 4 stock speakers with the JBL's as recommended by crutchfield and ended up put the stock speakers back; added an amp and sub and very happy with it doe under $300.

    I would argue that this is very NOT true, but I guess it also depends on the sound you are going for, and the condition of your stock speakers.

    The stock speakers in the new Tacoma was tuned to work very well with stock HU.

    After I replaced the stock speakers on my 2017 Tacoma with the JBL's, it rattled when I turned the volume over 1/2 up. That was why I put the stock speakers back and added an amp and sub instead.

    Just my experiment.

    That explains it, mine is a 2009, and I'm replacing those stock speakers. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

    Either go all the way with taco tuned or go cheap like I did :)

    I went with Crutchfield and got the adapters and wiring harness for "free". I didnt really notice any difference with the stock HU but i know once i upgrade to an aftermarket HU my Fosgates will be able to shine.

    Damn this is concerning. Does that sub fit behind your back seat?

    My stock speakers are very very OK, was really excited to upgrade for $140 bucks (20% off) to something better

    Shocks. Pegs. Lucky.
    On stock power you're better off keeping the factory stuff as long as it isn't damaged. You certainly can make things worse with just a driver swap.

    Have two of these on the floor in front of the rear seats. Pioneer also makes another box for the same shallow mount sub that is supposed to fit behind the rear passenger seat.
