Yes you need a Branick style spring compressor. But on the flip side it comes with 3yr 40k mile warranty. Better than everyone else in the industry.

Why wouldn't a standard generic set of spring compressors work?

I didn't ask, but if I had to guess I would say it wouldn't fit the coils.

I actually have a different set then the ones I posted in the pics, but don't see why they wouldn't work.

With the body of the shock so close to the coil I don't think it will fit. IMG_0039.jpgI know it's a crappy photo but you can see not much room for the jaws to grab the spring.

Thanks, I see what your saying, and just went out and looked at the set I have. I know I could make them work, I may have to modify them a touch.
How much are these things pre-loaded? I have never dealt with a coilover that could not be adjusted on the vehicle. Not meaning to be difficult, just trying to learn as much as I can before I buy. One universal thing I feel comfortable with is doing suspension components. What ever rig I have ever owned I have never had any issues with doing it myself. It would suck for me/deal breaker if I had to take a component to a shop for a simple adjustment. I have never owned a Taco, so trying to absorb as much as possible. The more I dive in and learn, the more bewildering it gets.

They come set for a truck with a bumper, winch and armor. 20mm of preload. I think it said 12mm for bumper only. Or something like that. The way I look at is, if you added all that stuff to your truck with king or Icon you would have to pull the coilovers and buy new springs and install. This way pull adjust reinstall done.

Sorry for the confusion, when I ask how much preload there is, I mean:
If you were to throttle the adjustment back to 0 threads exposed would the spring be free of any pre-load? Or, would you need to compress the spring another X millimeters to take the shock and spring apart? For instance (and I have no idea what I'm talking about as far as numbers) if you took the spring off of the shock the spring would measure 14", and the spring seats set at zero mm of coil over pre load would measure 13". Then the initial pre-load would be an inch. So 1/7th of the spring would be preloaded on the zero setting, and based on, say a 600lbs spring that would be roughly 85lbs of initial preload.
Just trying to understand as much as possible, and learn as much as possible.
    Thanks!

I have the OME BP-51 set up on my truck. Rode kind of rough before I added my Mobtown offroad rock sliders. Now it rides great on and off road.

Awesome, and any other weight on your rig? Are you at the 20mm of pre-load.

Thanks, I really like the looks of this setup, and am hoping more reviews and info will come out of the woodwork. This review has me doing a 180 on the direction I was planning on going.

I was on the fence between these and Kings. I talk with a couple guys on the east coast who are running these and was sold.

I have a 170 lb ARB Summit bumper and a 3/16" steel front skid plate from mobtown offroad as well, which is 65 lbs. No winch on the bumper yet though. Truck sits almost perfectly level. Before I had the rock sliders the back end was quite a bit higher, you could tell looking back from a distance. Yes, I am at 20mm of pre-load. Haven't touched the rebound or compression. It rides like a dream off road.

I initially tried renting a spring compressor from the local autoparts store as I've done for several other suspension jobs, but the body of the shock was too close to the coil to get a secure "grab" onto the coil as Juforrest mentioned. I'm sure there's a spring compressor out there that could get the job done in the garage/driveway, but rather than trial and error since I already had the coilovers off of the truck, I just headed to a local shop with the wall mounted version. Not the most convenient, but much safer in my opinion.

@WILDPEAK Hey there, you seem super knowledgeable about this lift. Any impression about how the front ride height would differ on a 2nd gen vs. your 3rd gen, while keeping the factory preload of 20 mm?
There is a little anecdotal evidence of 2nd gen people getting close to 4" front lift without bumpers/skids/winch. I'm running an aluminum bumper and IFS skid (80 lbs combined) and will add a ~55 lb winch soon. I'd like to end up with 2.5-3" in the front over stock, and hopefully not have to adjust preload more than once prior to install.

    Hey Wildpeak. Great writeup man.

I have the same kit on my 2017 TRD Off-Road and noticed the ride also being harsh probably due to the 20mm of preload. I'm not planning on putting on an after market bumper/winch so, I'm going to have the preload adjusted this week. What I'm wondering is if I should go down to 5mm or 10mm. I'm thinking 10mm because I won't be putting on a shell and thought if I went down to 5mm the right height would be much lower than the rear as well as the front being too soft compared to the rear. With that said, I do like the softer ride and if I did go down to 5mm on the front is there anything I can do to compensate for that on the rear? I assume taking out a leaf would be a bad idea. Anyway, any suggestions you may have would be awesome!

Do you have Dakars? If so you can remove the second overload spring. It will lower the rear by 1/2" and will not effect the capacity. I got that info straight from ARB.
