It could of been wearing for a while or happened at speed and I didn't hear it or whatever. But the events I described is how it went down. Perfectly normal, no noise and 4x4 up a driveway that's steep but no exposed gravel or asphalt and not spinning the tires (stability control still on). After we confirmed the driveshaft was turning / grinding and wheels were not I did put it in 4x4 and get it off the road as it was in the middle of a cul de sac and it made some bad noises as I moved it off the road. Each revolution of the back tires would have a bad grind but I explained this to Toyota and have no regrets as the damage was done. Had to move it a couple of hundred feet and no doubt that did some more damage. It was a snow storm and she couldn't stay in the middle of the road / cul de sac as that's illegal. Again that's not the point. There's no bigger advocate for Toyota Tacoma's than me and I have been let down.

Totally not a troll and not a third generation hater. Again a huge advocate about the Tacoma. I'm going to catch a ton of flack from this from all my F150, Ram and Silverado buddies (I know they're half tons but that's what everyone has) as I always rib them about the capabilities of the Tacoma. Just saying that maybe, just maybe there is a problem with the rear ends that needs to be addressed. Just like I put leaf springs in my last truck and then finally 6 years later there's a recall. Those leafs cost me way more than a set of gears would have but this should not happen. I would challenge anyone to repeat that result even if they were allowed to "abuse" the truck.

I must admit I laughed at this one. Lots of Californians seem to live in their own world.

The OP comes in to tell a story and suddenly he is making things up? Come on guys. What incentive does he have to actually make this story up.

I had made peace with the transmission. I think the ECT program should be the everyday driving program but if you drive them easy without ECT and even though they seems luggish and underpowered you can achieve decent mileage.

You seem to question the OP like you are an expert and yet you wrote "When you switch to 4x4, you don't generally start in 4lo?"

I have a few questions for you:
    1. Have you ever even read an owner's manual to a 4x4?
    2. Have you ever owned a 4x4?
    3. Have you ever lived where it snowed regularly? 4x4 to get up your drive in winter has been common in three different states that I have lived in.

I hear you. I do take it personally as I am a huge fan and advocate for the Tacoma. Making excuses why in my old truck the brake pedal had so much travel or the HVAC fan made a ticking noise or why I was on my third driver's side brake caliper. I am completely aware of all the faults of the Tacomas through every generation but this one really came out of left field. I had the howling in cross wind and they fixed. I thought that was going to be the biggest issue.

I'm aloud to ask questions. If you get offended by that, then the internet may not be for you.

To the OP's issue there has been atleast one other post about a rear end coming apart. That guy was doing doughnuts in dirt but it still should not have broken.

Just a question. I never had to go 4hi, usually went over heavier terrain so I couldn't just gun it. 4lo or 2wd was my go to.
