So - I'm looking to make some DIY collapsible/portable steel pistol & rifle targets. I'm thinking two of each. Before I throw the 60,000 Google Search net, I figured I'd ask here first. I've got a local steel fab shop that willing to make up the actual targets, so that's covered. I'm wanting to see collapsible/portable & preferably lightweight systems for hanging/attaching the steel targets.

You're welcome, with that said. The hook in the middle that looks like a coat hook. I snapped in half hitting the target with my 6.5 Creedmore this past weekend. In the future, I will just get the AR 500 hooks

Okay, figured the .45 out, the P/O painted some wierd dot on the front sight that isn't there normally, so if you line up the dot it shoots low.

    Several options here: https://jcsteeltargets.configio.com/ShoppingCart.aspx?com=productlist&cid=391&srch=t

    I use this setup: https://jcsteeltargets.configio.com...9&cid=391&returncom=productlist&source=search
I use electrical conduit for the legs and an old piece of rebar for the top. Quick and easy to setup and take down and stores anywhere.

Thanks for all of the suggestions...Good stuff.

After looking at most portable target stands, I'm leaning toward the following.

I'm much more handy with wood versus metal (not that this is overly complicated metal wise), so I'm thinking of building a saw horse type frame with 2x3 legs with 2x4 horizontal section to hang the steel targets.
I'm thinking 60 degree angle on the legs with some notches/cheek cuts cut in the top edge of the legs to nicely vertically support & secure the 2x4. I'd use 2 carriage bolts with wing nuts per unit to secure everything for quick assembly/dissasembly. Should I look for a certain type of steel for these (in the event of a stray). I'm thinking the 2x4 will be 36". All of the 12 legs can be identical.

    I want 3 targets (6", 8" and 10") for varying distances.

Weight will be less with wood and fully assembled, each unit will be lighter for moving around.

Have some spare black paint lying around, so it should look good.

Any fatal flaws in this approach?

Nothing wrong with that, but I can guarantee you the electrical conduit I use is a lot lighter, cheaper, easier to move, and will last a lot longer than 2X4s. Keep a good pair of gloves handy if you plan to move it. The wood will splinter pretty quick from the bullet spray.

Agreed, I built a few stands out of wood and they worked but between the splinters and bits of sharp jacket sticking out of them they are no fun to handle. This also of course means that they are only temporary, you can get a number of uses but eventually will have to replace them.

I have some new stands now that I made up using a few pieces of rebar and a pair of welded steel brackets on the end that hold 2 pieces of rebar together to make a cross piece and then have 2 small sections of tube welded on that I can stick rebar into so that I can adjust height and width just by changing out the lengths of rebar I am using. Works basically the same as the welded ones above but I can break it down nice and small to transport.

Here is a drawing of the bracket, I don't have any pictures at the moment.

    You see these?

Basically you buy the corner pieces and you can adjust height and width on the fly using super cheap rebar

Got to shoot a rifle that I've always wanted to shoot this past weekend. Bushmaster AR-10. My buddy was pissed I was able to shoot his rifle better then him.
