Check around your local window tinting shops. I bet one of them could completely wrap your hood for $100-200 and save you the hassle of doing it yourself. I had a local shop put a large matte black piece on my hood for $75.

vinyl durability is going to depend on which grade vinyl you buy, most have year ratings. Mine is a 12yr rated vinyl not that I plan on keeping it wrapped that long but a quality vinyl makes all the difference.

rather than painting an old boat you can just vinyl wrap the whole hull these days...

My brother owns a shop that does vehicle wraps and I give a helping hand from time to time. We recently did a roof wrap and it turned out great. You have to remove the antenna, cab light and roof rack plastic sleeves, but the over all job wasn't too bad. I took photos of the process, check out my build thread here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/brandens-silver-taco-build.465936/

Problem I typically see is most people assume laying vinyl is quick and easy. Well it's alot more work than just applying a decal. You need to remove any parts so you can tuck the vinyl under the area to avoid peeling. I've seen too many cut around a mirror or headlight etc. to cut corners. The vinyl in this area will eventually peel back, or I've also seen where the shop cut too deep and cut into the clearcoat/paint. Not good! Prep work prior to laying down the vinyl is important too. Wash it, clay bar it, then alcohol wipe it. Any debris on the area will show a bubble when wrapping it. Applying it, you will also need a heat gun to properly bend and apply on a bevel or curve.

Go with a 3M or Avery for vinyl. Both offer an almost 10 year warranty on their films. You buy cheap vinyl, it will peel, and eventually chip/flake and that is a nightmare to get off.

Ave price for a hood and roof would be around $300-$400 each at a certified shop.

Anyone in Minnesota (Twin Cities) looking to get this done, here's my brother's shop: www.creativecolorstudio.com

Avery viynl is the way to go. Good tack but slide glides, has air channels and lasts a while. If your not experienced I would go with avery. Other than that, 3m makes a good product.

That 3m Di-noc carbon fiber looks and feel like the real thing. It has a lot of texture.

I just started my project with Avery Dennison midnight sand matte metallic. I highly recommend it for exterior stuff, its very forgiving. The 3m Di-noc is thicker and difficult to place around bends and angles I tried some small interior pieces with it and they will need to be redone because they loom so shitty. The heat gun is your friend with the Di-noc. The Avery stuff for the exterior was 538$ shipped with a bunch of tools and sealers and such. It is tedious and time consuming, but worthwhile.tmp_11786-20170217_091359101526331.jpg

DONT BUY VINYL FROM AMAZON. You will waste your money when it peels or fades a week later. Go with a well known brand (Oracal, 3M, Avery) and purchase from an authorized dealer. You will thank me later!

Had my the center portion of my hood done at a local vinyl shop. Cost me just about $150 and I love it.
