Soy coated wiring? Is this some california faggotry?

No issues here-yet. Haven't heard of any lawsuit about it. Rodents chewing up wires and filters have been issues with vehicles since the oxcart was made.

10/10 first post with no substance.

ABNFDC is correct, rodents eat EVERYTHING, not just wiring.

    Sue the mice!!!!!

Insulation has been soy based for a long time.

Class action lawsuit? For what? Better sue every electronics manufacturer.

Rats ate the wires going to the knock sensors under the intake manifold on my truck. 1k for the dealership to fix it. Now I spray every rodent repellent Amazon has to offer under the hood.

Mercedes used a soy-based bio-degradable wiring insulation on many of their '91 through '96-1/2 models, it was the result of Germany's green movement gaining sufficient political power so as to force manufacturer's into using products made from "unicorn-poop" so that the earth will last forever, or something. MB stopped using it in the middle of the 1996 production runs (January of 1996).

The big problem MB had was not that mice enjoyed eating it, but rather that it did indeed "bio-degrade"; leaving wire harnesses (mostly in the engine compartment) just bundles of bare wires. However MB and other German automakers continued/continue to use bio-degradable plastics in most other applications, that is why many interior pieces/parts in German cars disintegrate in your hands after 8 to 10 years.

I am not surprised to hear that Toyota is using a similar product, and suspect many more makers are, but hardly find the fact that rodents chew it up to be Toyota's fault--rats and mice will chew/eat anything.

Here's a photo of the inside of the OEM headlamp switch on my '98 SL500:

That white plastic provided the locking detents for switch positions, it had just crumbled like dried custard. This "green" plastic is also hygroscopic, which is why the interior bits on 8-10 year old German cars often develop that sticky/gummy/spongy surface...

This is not a new thing. I had a car come in on a hook once for a no start. Was one of the funniest no starts I have ever heard. Turns out the vehicle had been parked for a couple months and a rat made a nest out of the air filter and chewed it up into almost a giant cotton ball of air filter and rat shit, sucked right into the throttle plate and choked he engine out.
