Second Gen Trail Gear bumper on a 16?
I already posted this as its own thread but was advised to ask it here in the front bumper thread. Sorry for the double post... Also I have done some searching here and elsewhere and don't see anyone talking about this, maybe I am not searching with the right questions, so please don't flame me for not searching.

Question is will a second generation bumper/ bull bar fit a third generation truck. I have Trail Gear front and rear bumpers and would like to know if they will fit a 2016 third gen truck? I spent some time with a tape measure and it looks like the front will work, Trail Gear stuff is not fit tight to the bodywork like some of the higher end bumpers. From what I understand the frame on the second generation trucks are the same as the third generation.

I don't know of anyone who has tried this yet, maybe you should be the first so everyone else will know if it works? My immediate guess is that the bumpers will bolt onto the frame because the mounts are the same, but they will be so far from fitting the body shape that it wouldn't work or it would look terrible. The rear bumper may also contact the tailgate when it opens because the tailgate has so much convex curve to it compared to the 2nd gen gate.

 

I just spent some time with a tape measure and am going to give it a try. It looks like the biggest challenge is the height and protrusion of the grill on the 16'. I agree the mounting points seem to be identical, it is going to come down to clearance / aesthetics with the body. The Trail Gear is not a highly fit unit anyway and is about as minimal as you can get for actual bumper structure so it should be interesting to see how it looks....

 

I just happen to know of something in the works. I would guess we will have availability in the next 4-6 weeks.

I stopped following this thread for a little while after my bumper was delivered, so I hope I'm not asking a question that has already been asked. I have the Aluminum CBI Off Road bumper that weighs somewhere in the ballpark of 60lbs. After installing it my front end is sagging about an inch lower than it was with the factory bumper. My question is if I installed 5100s around the truck, could I lift the truck about an inch in the back and bring the front up high enough to maintain the factory-ish looking camber? I don't want my ass end sagging too much when I tow a trailer. Has anyone gone this route?

 

Anyone have the weight difference of the CBI T3 aluminum vs the steel? Is the $300 worth it?

 

Per CBI website the steel T3 with grill guard is 118lbs and per the post above you the aluminum version is ~60lbs.

No problem. IMO a ~50% weight reduction is worth $300 but like everything in life, "it depends".

 

Per an e-mail from the CBI sales team I received when I was researching which bumper I wanted.

"Regarding weight you are around 125 lbs for the full grill protection option in steel and the aluminum option is around 60 lbs."

The weight savings for me was worth the extra money. (of course I had an insurance check paying for a good portion of the bumper and install)

I was also told over the phone by these guys that the steel would hold up better to jagged rocks and things like that vs the slightly thicker aluminum. So for more of a rock crawler application the steel would be the better option. For what I do in my truck, aluminum is more than strong enough.

 

im more worried about stupid people in parking lots, deer, and trees on the trails

 

Than I would opt for a large steel bumper such as I have an ARB summit bumper. 170 pounds of steel, deer and trees will get destroyed running into it.

im surprised more people haven't commented or looked at this thread I made... its a full install how to for the CBI front bumper install... a lot of good tips and tricks for the hardware and what exactly goes where... its helped a few people by allowing them to see if anything is missing... thus preventing stoppages or issues with the install...

Hey all. I've collected info on 7 bumpers that I'm deciding between. They are all of similar geometry, with slim form factors that follow the curves of the stock grill but still require a little cutting. They all offer increased approach angles over stock, with varying amounts of added or subtracted length to the overall truck. Other bumpers that are close to this form, but not quite what I'm looking for, are provided by great companies such as C4, Relentless, All-Pro, SOS, and countless others. I'm not trying to bash on these companies, just trying to provide info on bumpers that fit my preference. I'm set on a steel bumper, so I've just included info on those (a couple of the following bumpers are also available in aluminum, for those interested). Starts at $1300 (bare, no extra lights). Fog light cutouts are compatible with stock fog lights. Can be bought through ToyTec; ToyTec and InSain are located near Thornton, CO. I am drawn to InSain because they are the only manufacturer on this list near the Denver area. It appears that this bumper does not extend too much, if at all, beyond the stock length; something to keep in mind for frontal collisions.

The Baja and Baja Low Profile bumpers are priced the same. The only difference (as far as I can tell from the pictures) is that the Low Profile bumper has bull bars at a lower angle. They range from $1275 (bare, no extra lights) to $1879 (powdercoated, Pro lights). Stock fogs do not fit. Shipped from Riverside, CA. From my research it is apparent that Demello Off Road produces a quality bumper, not only in terms of outer looks, but also in terms of a well-engineered support structure behind the bumper. More into my personal preferences: I dislike branding and should I go forward with Demello, I will probably end up covering the "DO" with my license plate.

Most of this info is either from this thread or his build thread. I haven't heard that he's put this into production yet, but I saw that he said it'd be around $1100. It is modular (meaning you can get a two-tone finish) and about 85 lb. I also saw a pic of a bolt-on bull bar that covers abut half the grill. It leaves the factory fogs in place while adding 6" lights.

Price is $1150 (bare, 4" LED fogs included, turn signal lights included, 119 lb). This is the only bumper on this list that includes cutouts for turn signals, which seems redundant to me, since the in-headlight ones aren't lost.

pelfrey, Demello, cbi bumpers actually protrude less than the stock bumper, better angle of departure. The insain fab bumper protrudes the least.

Another thing is the CBI bumper has a better mount for the very bottom of the bumper. It is boxed full in instead of just tabs. I know the C4 bumper has just tabs but heard they were looking into boxing it in so that if you were to hilift the front it wouldnt deflect into the grille. Not sure if any of the others box in the bottom.

 

can you post some more pics of this setup? this is the exact thing im looking at and i have a white truck.
