I know it's hard to understand because it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. No loaner as in piss off and take the bus. The only way I would "qualify" is if I had purchased the ECP. However the ECP would only truly kick in AFTER the initial 100k / 5 year powertrain warranty expired so it is completely insane! IMO

IIRC loaners are at dealers discretion. I would assume most have them so that they receive positive feedback so they get the coveted "presidents award".

That 50% number comes from a rather lengthy poll in a different thread about how many people do or don't have a howling sound from their differential. About half report having the sound. Many of us are already on a second or third differential because of it.

That thread is really only about the annoying sound and doesn't have any reports of catastrophic failures as far as I remember.

Ross Perot called it back in 1992.NAFTA is a rotten deal for US workers and consumers.Cost of the trucks soared while quality seems to be going down lining the pockets of large shareholders. What do you expect from $ 2.00 an hour "auto workers" using materials and steel sourced from who knows where. 35K to 42K for a mid sized truck made with 2.00 an hour foreign labor ?I My $10K out the door 22-R made 100% in Japan by well paid, skilled Japanese auto workers was a much better value.

You need to correct your statement to "50% of all 3rd gens that took a poll from a thread are having rear diff issues".

Gotcha. So to be fair Im sure some people who think they have a rear diff howl are probably getting that sound confused with the lower a arm whistle. Couple that with the amount of people that actually voted per the number of units actually built that 50% is inflated. Defiantly at least by one because in another thread there were some that voted they had the rear diff howl that either didn't have it or dont even own a Tacoma. And here I go, not citing that post...LOL.

Its not just on here, you can also go on YouTube and find it littered with rear end howling plus a guy playing in a little sandy dirt where his rear grenades. Then think of how many non enthusiasts that don't even pay any attention or if they do bring it up then Dealer slaps them down by saying its normal.

I'm sure you're right. 50% is probably high.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself. My truck is a bone stock 2016 OR with 12,000 miles. The first differential howled pretty loud starting at about 500 miles of ownership. The second differential howled from the moment it was installed and it's gotten much louder over time. No flakes in the oil. Both differentials properly broken in. Differential fluid is full. In my case I can hear it over the radio and I'm talking Metallica, not Enya. It's annoying as hell but I don't really think that I (or anyone else with the sound) is in any real danger of immediate catastrophic failure.

I just wish they would fix it so that I can cross that last gripe off my list. I love the truck in every other way after a few other kinks were successfully corrected.

This is why I bought a 1980's imported Hilux. I can't trust the Tacoma Chief Engineer who used to be an engineer for Chrysler products.

I thought Tacoma's were made in Texas with American workers

Do American workers make $2/hr in Texas ?

I agree that Japanese made 4Runner and land cruiser quality is too notch

Agreed. I've beat the crap out of wimpy rearends and never destroyed one. This one failing is due to something else.

After owning a 2nd gen and then a 3rd gen and now a 4runner Pro I cant believe the Tacoma and the 4runner are made on the same planet much less by the same company. #4Runner4thewin

Funny, but do you really believe that? I'm sure while at Chrysler, the guy had to deal with different constraints than now.

Depends on the first digit of your VIN if it was made in Mexico or in Texas.

I don't know if he is a sorry excuse for a human as he may be a great guy.

But his engineering credibility is certainly suspect.

Maybe Toyota thought he could bring some cost cutting mojo to the Tacoma, just wish he hadn't included quality cutting in there too.
