I'm going out with a few seasoned friends and my 6 year old son. We'll see how he does.

I want to do this OBW setup. I will have to scour your post and probably ask a few questions when I get to it (probably late March), but it looks pretty straight forward. I am planning on doing a LOT more weekend trips around the Southwest once my house is finally sold next month!

Thank you for this. I'm going to have to check this out on my truck this weekend. I was a little concerned I wasn't getting full droop out of my rear and was really considering a shackle flip because of that.

My only thing is. My truck is about a year and a half old with 43k miles on it. Do you think my shackle bushing could be that bad already?

No. The factory rubber bushings are pretty robust for the most part. They work. The only time they don't in my experience is if they are over-torqued like one of mine was.

I'm still waiting to see pics of the 4x innovation aftermarket shackle to show up in @scocar 's most epic profusion of truck parts hub build thread.

I finally found time about a week ago (and weather cooperated) to primer my modified stock shackles.

I stayed home for two days during the high impact winter storm, then said to hell with this, and packed up in the rain and went camping anyway.

It was the right call to make. Found a glorious campsite at the end of a lonely trail.

Opened box, looked at stuff, did this

    closed box.
    :anonymous:

They are impressive hunks of metal, well fabbed. I did do a bushing check on their provided bushings, and they are an extremely snug fit to get started.

Sorry, been way to busy with work and personal stuff lately. Plus until I have time to work on them and paint them, I'm not bothering with pics. But we are soaking wet up here. I'd also like to hit the edges with a file to chamfer the side plates to promote better coating adhesion and durability on this very exposed bit of hardware. Sharp edges are generally where an coating failure will begin, assuming all other prep work has been thorough.

What little garage time I've had recently went to this for the tot:

Now, now - you can go play in the desert once you take all the parts off of your shelf and put them on your truck.

Didn't realize the 4x shackles shipped raw steel. No worries. Yeah with all the rain, it's a PITA to paint stuff.

So that red contraption, I guess I'm too dumb to know what it is... It's too small to be a cage, a fort, a stool? Step up to be tall, sit down to be small!

    :notsure:

    What is it?

:hattip:Thank you. I take it I must be doing something right then.

I was thinking i might have over torqued mine also, but Im pretty sure I torqued mine at factory specs though. What do you think about using locknuts on the shackles and using a lighter torque spec?

I think it might be tough to find a nylock with the appropriate thread pitch for the shackle bolts. I thought about swapping the front and rear leaf spring bolts to SAE grade 8 and using nylocks to prevent any backing out or overtorquing. Should work since they are only used as a pivot/mount and don't positively engage (thread into) to anything else in the suspension.

I think Lock nuts are fine, but I would stay with the factory torque spec, or snug them down to whatever you prefer. Once you tighten the fastener, use a paint pen on the shackle nut, so if it moves you can see it at a glance.

What you don't want is a bolt that is too loose. A bolt with not enough tension there is lots of potential to damage bolt hole in the shackle hanger.

Oh and as an aside, if you have a fastener you never want to come apart (unless blow torch), use super glue, or two-part epoxy. 500-3200 PSI breaking force. :anonymous: Don't ask me how I know. lolz

Yup, a "learning tower." The dowels slip in at adjustable heights and support the loose platform, which is screwed to the dowels. Greatly mitigates toddler kitchen mealtime fiascos.
