Good they had it all ready to drop in for you. Shimming gears up is a skill that not all technicians have the ability to do. Glad you're sorted out with the Toyota dealer.

Dude chill, I never said OP lied. I simply said that things were bothering me and I wanted more information regarding the photos. You implied I called OP a liar, your words not mine.

Agreed. The second I realized it was a complete "pod" and it eliminated shimming and backlash checking I felt a million times better. I just pray to God it doesn't have the rear end humming / howl that others have because it definitely did NOT have it previous to this pod being installed.

I wonder if you'd be able to go easy on the truck while the teeth are seating in? I'm curious if the howl is caused by gears not being properly worn in. We really should not have to do that too much nowadays though. The fluid comes out pretty filthy though when I did my change at 5k. I mean it's like gunmetal colored molasses.

Its not due to break-in, I had mine replaced for howling and the new one was quiet for all of 10 minutes.

I cannot see why you would have to but I will be going easy anyway as for now I've lost faith it can take ANYTHING as it broke from very light use.

As messy as that technicians stall is you should be very happy you got a complete pod. Opening up the rear diff and RR the blown parts with new always invites the possibility of contaminants. A dirty stall tells me that the likelihood of contaminants getting in there is higher vs a clean work area.

I put 115,000 miles on a rear that whined the whole time. Excessive backlash..... never broke though.

I'm guessing a "pod" is the center section as the Toyota rear is a bit like a 9-inch Ford. In that case, the "pod" will be exposed to whatever. I don't think I could really judge the quality of the work based on the pic in the OP. That may as well just be the "tear down area" or the junk pile. You also don't really need a "clean room" to do good work.

I'm not saying all is fine, just I think that we are jumping to conclusions based on very minimal information.

So true, just be glad it's not on a greasy blanket in a dirt field somewhere. The "dirty" greasy shop tables are fine, it's the dirt and other debris that will foul things up if it gets in there.

Just make sure they keep that greasy crud out of the interiors.

Personally, since I've had 2 loud differentials on this truck, I'd rather have someone actually test the tolerances and set one up in-house vs. trust the same factory in Malaysia (or wherever) that made my first two.

Drop-ins are easy but the art of doing a job right is lost on whatever factory that Toyota is buying these differentials from.

I've said this numerous times in the threads about the howling diff.
Won't find the true cause until someone bites the bullet and has a differential specialist do a full assembly on theirs.

Well, it could be a design issue as well as many people that seem to have the whine. I don't know the real numbers though. The design that goes into a gear is actually quite complex. They look like they are just mating teeth, but it's much more than that.

Edit: My Machinery's Handbook dedicates 188 pages to gears.
