How do YOUR brakes feel????

Hey out there, so I have an 09 I4 4x4, with about 16300 miles. Good truck, i can afford it and its a good workhorse. Last friday my gf and i bought a 06 4runner, nice ride looks good, 40000 miles for $18000, certified with warranty and new tires. So i've been driving her car and really worrying about my brakes, compared to my truck, her brakes are a lot more sensitive, and have fantastic feel. Mine on the other hand feel really spongy for the first 1/4 of travel, and finally grab but still feel like they arent fully broken in. At 16.3K miles, i know they should be. I really dont know if i should worry but i want to know how YOUR truck's brakes feel. thanks for dropping by

EDIT: I have STOCK dunflops 245/65 16 with STOCK alloys, painted black of course.

 

My brakes were great, but 55,000 miles later, they are losing a little bit of their stopping power. I need new brakes. I've abused mine.


But up until ~50,000 miles they felt very sensitive and grabby. They still do, but I need to push a little harder than I used to and it also takes a little bit longer to stop.

 

i wonder if the 4 banger has differnet components from v6, anyone?

 

mine feel like crap, i worry sometimes. they feel mushy, i plan on upgrading my brakes soon, hopefully that will improve.

 

Only if its a 5 lug.
5 lug has a 1 piston caliper
6 lug has a 4 piston caliper

 

I think that's pretty typical of Tacoma's... I really didn't like mine when I first got it, but I'm used to it now, and I've never had any troubles stopping when I need too (which is the important part). A few weeks ago though, they checked my breaks as part of a routine checkup, and the first couple of stops after that, the felt GREAT. Nice and firm, and grabby.... but they quickly loosened up to their normal feel again.

 

If they feel spongie check for internal leaks start with the master cylinder than follow down the brake lines also u should try bleeding ur system and adding fresh brake fluid brake fluid is hygroscopic that means it absorbs moisture so if u haven't changed the fluid in a while do so it should help a Lil.

 

4-runner may be 4 wheel disc breaks.
My truck breaks work great, just take a little more push then my Camry or Volvo do. Both the Camry and Volvo are 4 wheel disc.

 

My brother has an 06 4Runner and I noticed the same thing when I drove his for the first time. Yes the 4Runners are 4 wheel disc brakes, I guess thats the biggest difference. My brakes work great even at 62k (original pads) they just aren't as sensitive as the 4Runners, you just have to push a little harder. I would have to guess the difference is 4 wheel disc vs. the rear drum we have.

 

i feel the exact same way. even took it to the mechanic. he said, "yup, they all feel like that". i have no issues stopping in any condition. the only reason i know that they feel suspect is that all my other cars have great pedal feel. my 08 silverado, work truck is the best of them. taut, firm, perfectly sensitive brakes pedal.

 

The new '10 with 3,700 miles on it has great brakes, so far...

My 2005 had some issues... ABS made grawling noise and didn't want to slow me down in the dirt or on wet streets... scary! I had a clicking noise from 8,000 miles to the first set of new pads that they couldn't fix.

My 2001 was awesome... no issues, no noise.

 

One of the first driving impressions I had from the Taco was that the brake pedal feel. Seems as it takes more pedal pressure than what I'm accustomed to.

It's not that there's a lack of breaking power, it just takes more power from my leg. Kinda feels a little like my old S10 with manual brakes... well, not that bad.

I pulled the wheels off to have a look and was impressed to see 4-pots up front.

Pads/rotors are new. Next time it's due up for brake maintenance, I'll probably get a different pad compound and maybe even stainless braided lines.

What sucks is when I get into my car now and hit the brakes, being use to the truck, I feel like I'm going to head-butt the windshield!

 

There are some differences in the brake control system among different models. The brakes in 2009 were improved, so 2009 and 2010 trucks will be different than older models.

Here is a summary of the changes and a table which may be helpful.

• The vacuum brake booster and the brake control system (ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, TRAC, VSC andAuto LSD) are provided as standard on all models.

• The hydraulic brake booster and the brake control system (ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, TRAC,A-TRAC, VSC, Auto LSD, Downhill Assist Control and Hill-start Assist Control) are no longer available as option on all models but provided as an option on 4WD models with the 1GR-FE engine (except the super long wheelbase models).

• A brake master cylinder, whose structure has been optimized, is provided on the vacuum brake booster models to achieve a weight reduction.

• An A-TRAC switch has been added to the hydraulic brake booster models, which allows the A-TRAC to operate according to the road surface condition even if rear diff. lock mode is selected.

 

I gotta push a lil harder now that the trucks got some miles on it. I'm gonna replace em with some Hawk Ceramics here soon

I'm not crazy about my 2010s brakes. Mine too feel like I gotta really push hard to get to to stop fully. How long does it usually take for brake to fully break in. I'm just now rounding the 1k mark

 

They feel a little lazy compared to other vehicles I've driven. But it makes braking much more smoother instead of jerky. But if you pounce on them, they lock very nicely indeed.

I just test drove a 4 Runner today at lunch and they feel alot more responsive than my truck. I don't drive the truck everyday, as I commute in our corolla, but I do notice a difference. I def. have to push a little harder in the truck than the corolla, but I don't get the rattle feel like I do in the commuter either.

 

My 05 dbl cab has just over 37k and the brakes have always felt mushy
