I have a 2015 (2nd generation 4.0) and like it a lot. 2016 and beyond (3rd generation 3.5) seems to be hit or miss to some guys based on comments on here...

Yes they are pricey and in turn, they hold their value well and seem to run forever if kept well maintained. There's lots of good info on here if you're into doing your own maintenance and mods.

    I had a 95 with a 3.4 and a 5 speed which was a great truck and I have to admit that I like my 07 4.0 6 speed better by a wide margin.

Welcome. The 2015 4.0 V6 is probably one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Scroll through the 2 gen thread for a more in depth look.

The biggest complaint with the 3.5 is how high the power band is. You should also do a little research on the transmissions between the two.

3.5 sucks. It runs at high RPMs so it always feels like the truck is under powered (or about ready to break). Go test drive it. You'll either hate it or not care.

I would not buy a 3rd Gen. Way too many problems.

You really have to drive both and decide for yourself. Just remember that the gen 3 is new and is cutting teeth.

Its too early to tell if the 3rd gen trucks will hold their value as well as the 2nd gen trucks do. I'm thinking they will even though the motors are not as nice.

Way is an exaggeration and from a source who knows nothing besides what he reads here. I've had an 08,11 and 15 with the 4.0 and a 16, 17 with 3.5. First all my tacoma's have their little things when it comes to whatever issues, I'd disregard a lot of the blind hate for the new truck, in regards to the 4.0 vs 3.5, the 4.0 is a better power band imo, a lot smoother feeling and the small bit of extra torque just feels better off the line. That dosen't make the 3.5 bad, just different, it's sluggish at first but once it gets going it gets going. Both have smooth shifting, etc. Just depends on what your looking for, drive both if you can and go from there.

I have a 4.0 and my dad has 3.5 (4Runner) I prefer the 4.0 test drive them both to fell the difference for yourself. Totally different in every way

So far they have been and pretty sure they will remain that way. They are selling as strong as prior gens. There's just a lot of hate and discussion on here that would skew people's view points.

Well again, the oldest 3rd gen is 2 years old and thats just not a good test of retained value. Lets see how they are selling in another 2 years and hoe their value is holding when they are 5. That will be the true test.

Okay bud. I love the conspiracy/3rd gen hate/fault finding here. 1st gens, 2nd gens and guarantee 3rd gens will all hold their value, I'm sure the 1st gen guys said the same bullshit in 2006 about 2nd gens. Please. I work at an auto auction part time I see Tacomas and Toyotas run through of all ages all day.

Seriously? Conspiracy? Dude, if you know anything at all about cars you would know you cant possibly judge the value retention on a brand new model. For shits sake where do people get their info from?

Well obviously captain obvious. But based on a long history of high resale from 1st gen to 2nd gen, it's safe to say its not gonna change all of a sudden and to allude based on a few reports of issues on Tacomaworld (2nd gens had engine mount issues, cooling, etc. 1st years as well) is dumb. I've seen a few 16s (1 year old cars of all brands come through, so don't try to read into that either) in person go through my auction block, that's where I get my info from, how about you?
