Could be "locked" (i.e. freq filter notched... or in other words if it is programmed to TX within, for example, 144-148MHz ONLY, then it won't TX outside of that freq band range).

    I hope this helps?

@Redfive11 Steve, btw, you can typically receive a wide freq band. In short, you can use it as a "scanner", just as long as you know what frequency you want to listen in on!!! For example, punch in 153.950 and you will/SHOULD eventually here Long Beach Fire Dispatch!!!

So, you can utilize your 2-band radio as a 2m/70cm scanner.

I hope this helps you understand a little more. I know it doesn't help with what you are experiencing, just letting you know what other things are possible to do.

the frequency you are on is most likely the the receiving frequency. Most repeaters use an offset frequency. Usually use +/-600mhz. for example the Clara Repeater will broadcast (you receive) at 145.220mhz but the transmit (you talk) frequency is at 144.460mhz. The transmitter is actually using two channels to operate, one the transmit and one to receive.

I believe we all use 152.525 (that might be wrong) when we go out. I can hear on that channel but not transmit. Will I be able to use that channel? Is it a matter of changing a setting? On my handheld I get all channels.

@WileECoyote you going to the brewery meet on Thursday? Maybe you can show mw a few things?

This too! I was trying to use the 151.625 frequency with others using the BaoFeng. This frequency is not available on my kenwood. The guy at the Ham Radio Outlet explained to me that these were channels for a specific purpose and I could only receive, not transmit.

I personally don't have any experiences with that other than what I've heard about the Baofeng handhelds. Some of them are "locked" and some are not???!!! It all depends on how they were shipped from the factory and I don't understand why it is like that?

So, the how, from my understanding, you have to buy the programming cable and get the correct CHiRP software (i.e. it has to match and/or be newer than the firmware that is programmed in your radio). The programming cables are really NOT all that expensive (NOTE: just don't go SUPER CHEAP if/when you purchase one) and the CHiRP software is typically, that I know of, a free download.

@dtaco06 Danny, I don't know if you can add on to anything or possibly correct me if I am wrong about what I just stated???!!! Thanks Danny.

He is correct, obviously. That freq band, as well as others, is starting to off in to the "commercial band", which, a license is required for commercial band use as well.

The 2m HAM band is STRICTLY from 144-148MHz, which MOST radios are freq filter notched to!!! Just to let you guys know ahead of time!!!

    I hope this helps? :confused::thumbsup:

I COULD be mistaken, but he his trying to accomplish SIMPLEX and/or radio to radio comms and not going through a repeater system? Which, btw, I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend in TX through a repeater without being licensed!!! Just saying people, because you WILL eventually get caught and it is a SUPER HEFTY FINE and possible jail time!!!

As a matter of fact, I gotta go for now to take shi* to storage!!! I'll be back on later tonight though!!!

Ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

I agree, there are guys just monitoring the repeaters listening for call signs.

I realized it was simplex when I seen the frequency he posted because I have the same problem he has using my Kenwood TMV71. I really like my radio, but I may be forced to use a BF when I go wheeling with the guys.

    KM6HEO Clear!
