Hey guys, finally getting ready to make a purchase on a new Tacoma. I am looking very hard at a 2017 TRD Sport, Double Cab, 4x4, with technology package and JBL stereo, blue with whatever color interior they happen to have. There is a dealership near where I live that is owned by a company I happen to own stock in. I asked if there was a discount for shareholders and there is. I was told shareholder cost is "invoice minus holdback". Now, I have read over what this means online but I am still not clear on a couple things.

    1. What is invoice price? Is this calculated based off the base price of the truck only, or the price of the truck plus the tech package?
    2. Is invoice minus holdback a good deal or what should I aim for in my negotiations? I have my own financing set up and may or may not trade in toward the truck.

    Thank you in advance!

Based on my recent purchasing experience, invoice price includes tech packages, floor mat, etc, all included. Dealers I dealt with provided me invoice pricing on the paper. It could be depending on which city/state you are purchasing from, but quoting invoice price minus dealer hold back is pretty good deal I think.

A dealer who is under Costco Automotive deal in my city quoted me "Costco price will be between MSRP and invoice." It is not a good deal.

Packages have their own invoice and msrp pricing. Add all invoice prices included with your truck to get a full invoice price.

The closer to invoice the better your deal is.

    This is confusing terminology.

If you take the invoice prices of all the stuff you're buying and adding it up, then yes the "invoice" includes all the stuff.

If you're looking at the invoice prices listed in the referenced thread, those are just the individual invoice prices and don't include everything.

Correct. I got a Costco quote when buying my truck. Then I did my usual buying process and got quotes substantially below the Costco price. It's better than paying MSRP for folks who can't research and negotiate, but it's by no means a "good deal" in my experience.

Just make sure it's not "invoice-holdback........+$1000 'dealer fee'" or something like that. Check all of their numbers thoroughly. They can show you the exact price breakdown for the truck in the computer system, including invoice for each option. It should align closely with the thread that was posted earlier (it is possible to be off by ~$10 or so per option, but shouldn't be much more). You can't get out of the delivery fee, which was $900 when I bought.

There is a lot they can do to get you in the door and a lot they can do to bend you over on the way out.

And yes if you can truly get it for invoice-holdback + TTL + delivery fee then you got a great deal.

This is exactly why I think talking about invoice price to a dealer is a waste of time and usually a source of confusion.

Take the invoice numbers from the above referenced thread. Figure out your TTL for where you are. Use those figures as a basis for negotiating on an Out-The-Door all-in bottom-line price.

Going by OTD price avoids a lot of smoke and mirrors and bullshit from the dealer.

I think a lot has to do with supply and demand where you live also. It seems like folks in California in general have a harder time getting close to invoice, whereas the Mid Atlantic and Florida seem to get great deals more often. I signed for the same truck with a M/T, and it took about 6 weeks and 12 dealers before I settled on $500 under invoice after the dealer discount, incentives, and dealer fees. I live in Maine and I felt like I got a very good deal. Tax is irrelevant in the deal because it varies so much from state to state. Also watch out for bullshit dealer add ons like paint sealant, fabric guard, window tint, etc. Anything that isn't added as a PIO is almost 100% profit for the dealership. If the dealer does show you the invoice and it includes TDA, you should try and get that removed as will. Some dealers may and some may not.

Just an FYI.... but if you seen a dealer's invoice, it INCLUDES TDA fee (or now TMF/TAF). This is an addition cost they add to the truck for marketing ads, commercials, ect. in your region. But still, this is a good price for your truck.

I think the dealership just told you they were giving you a shareholders discount, so they could win your business. If you think about it, anyone could just go online to a trading website, buy one share for the company that owns that dealership, buy the truck with a shareholder discount, then go back to the website and sell that one share.

Typically they have minimums for how long you hold the share and must show documentation.
