We did this trip in Aug/Sept of '16, I'd be happy to answer any questions you've got. The ferry ride was amazing, the Inside Passage is a unique part of Alaska.

The "camping" photo awhile back in this thread was from that trip... Actually my 'intro' photo was from the ALCAN too... I've never done a full write up on the trip, there are so many others out there with more of a flair for it. But we took the ferry up, drove to Prudhoe, all over the interior, down the Kenai, puttered around Yukon, then down the ALCAN, a few Canadian dirt roads in Alberta/BC, then back into Montana. We took two months, and it was still a lot of driving and gas was the biggest expense...

It was a unique opportunity - between jobs, we had the savings, the time off, and we'd always wanted to go. Even our 4 year old had a good time, he'll still rattle off random Alaskan animals and ask why we can't see them in Wyoming.

Oil and new tires before leaving Montana. Rotated the tires in a campground after finishing the Dalton Hwy. Oil Change and tire rotation in Anchorage, then rotated the tires again when we got back to MT.

Most of the bills are on auto-pay from the bank. We were between homes, so no rent/utilities. Insurance, Cell Phones, InReach, etc. all paid themselves each month. It isn't much of a "backcountry" trip though, I was doing an on-line college class, so we were hitting WiFi with some regularity to be able to keep on top of things.

Some - I made a big Google Map of all the cool places mentioned in other people's trip reports as well as things that friends told us about, then started trying to connect the dots. We chose to take the ferry up so that we didn't have a hard deadline to be back, mostly we were just trying to stay ahead of the weather coming back south. There were a couple of hard dates that drove planning (campground reservations in Denali NP, my sister flying in, a boat tour in Seward, and roads/border crossings closing) but the rest was sort of open. I did a bunch of rough time/distance estimates but they left a fair amount of flexibility to explore places. The estimates really helped plan when/where to find a town to restock groceries, do laundry, take a shower, and where we wanted to plan extra days for activities.

Sounds like a blast! Be hard to go back to normal life after all that. Would be for me.

One of my favorite views - camped at the end of a dirt airstrip in the interior. As we were having dinner a moose walked across the strip about 50 yards in front of the truck.

Not a bad price 160 shipped. What's comparable? I did my retros 1 year ago and I wish I would of stayed stock really for the money and time and my OCD of things being clean and good
