Well, living in a condo where I'm not supposed to work on my cars/trucks, I decided to start looking for ways to minimize my time in the garage at night with the garage door closed...haha. My wife puts around 4-6k a year max on her car nowadays (98 Honda Accord with close to 250k miles, original engine but trans was rebuilt at around 200k miles), I wait the full year before performing an oil change on her car.

On my truck I average anywhere from 12-16k a year (one year I put close to 30k). It's an 02 with around 210k miles now. So, I don't quite reach a full year before oil changes on it. Like you, I get to around 8-10k miles and do an oil change.

I never did any type of testing but just based on the way both vehicles run and comparing how the oil "looks" I feel comfortable sticking with Amsoil. Plus, it's easy to order and have it delivered when I need it.

I haven't shopped around since I've been using Amsoil for a while now. At the time I remember researching online and talking to friends and everyone had their own opinion. I decided to give Amsoil a try and have been using them since (their oil is supposedly good for 25k normal use/15k miles severe use, same with their oil filters). Not trying to steer you towards what I use, just giving you another option.

More info on the 8-10k oil please! Is this just regular synthetic or something special?

Oh, no big thing, I just switched to 100% synthetic at 88,000 miles on my 2010 Tacoma. It was the first time I used that for motor oil. This was just the first replacement of the oil and filter since then (96,000 miles). I used Castrol Edge.

Previously, I went to my dealer every 4,000 miles for an oil change (on all three of my Tacomas). Since all the other lubricants in my truck (tranny, transfer case, differentials) are synthetic, I just switched. Synthetic has double the life of dyno, ie. 10,000 miles instead of 5,000 miles between changes. I change the motor oil (and filter) sooner than the recommendation... so now at 8,000 instead of 10,000 miles.

I hear really good stuff about that oil. The turbo charged guys with big power love it.

I did this time, not the first time, however. Sale at Auto Zone .

EDIT: It was Edge "High Mileage" not "Extended Performance" I got.

I see. Interested to see if you feel/see any difference between the two.

I remember reading/seeing results on bobistheoilguy but that was years ago. Glad Amsoil is still doing well. I think I'll keep my membership for now.

I hear ya on that, I have my 2 Motorcycles in the garage and work on em with the door closed. I can only work on my truck on holidays when maintenance and the office ppl are gone. I have a stealthy way of doing oil changes now, only takes 10 minutes haha.

my last oil change was amy first 10k interval, I used mobil1 extended performance and the matching filter. around 9-10k I started noticing a little bit of power loss and my gas mileage went down. I'm gonna stick with 7500 for my OCI.

I'm glad I'm not the only one...haha. My oil changes take me about 30 minutes. I have one of those quick drain valves on my truck, so no tools needed...just takes longer for the oil to actually drain. On the other cars I need to get the jack and stands out, that's always fun when trying to keep quiet.

I let my OCI go closer to 15k once when I just couldn't find time to do it and did notice the truck idle a little rougher. Since then is when I decided to do my oil changes at 10k or 1 year, whichever comes first. If you or anyone on here wants to try Amsoil out, let me know (I think I mentioned having a membership with them earlier in this thread).

When I worked at a motorcycle shop the Amsoil rep told me (he told me so grain of salt with it) that a car they sponsored racing ran an entire season on the same oil. After each race they would pull a sample of the oil to test and even after the last race the results showed the oil was still good. Pretty crazy if you ask me!

The only problem with running oil for a long time is the fact that it will get some condensation in it from heat cycling and combustion as well as hydrocarbons getting into the oil passing by the piston rings during combustion cycles. The oil itself may be fine the the hydrocarbons and water isnt the best thing ever. Just my opinion, I change every 7K with Rotella synthetic on all my cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Well I change it on the bikes every few hours actually, lol.

An oil change is the cheapest insurance (I think) for your engine's long life! When I used petroleum oil, I changed it between 3-4 thousand miles. I put over 100,000 miles on my first two Tacomas in less than 5 years. That was a lot of oil changes! However, I did not have one engine problem.

I switched to synthetic oil last year on my third Tacoma at 88,000 miles (7 years old) after having the regular oil changed every 3-4 thousand, as before. No problems with the engine. I went 8,000 miles on it. Castrol Edge 0w-40. The oil was darkened, but still transparent.

The replaced oil last week was Castrol Edge High Mileage 5w-30.

I need to correct this post... I got Castrol Edge High Mileage, not the Extended Performance. I was looking at the website for Castrol and saw the difference between the two bottles.

Oil catch can ftw! Spray so much water out my truck engine.

@Speed Freek you run rotella in the bikes? Works fine with wet clutches?

Yep I run the Rotella 15w-40 non synthetic in my bikes with wet clutches or transmissions sharing oil. And the Rotella T6 Synthetic in everything else (engine side on Honda CRFs, cars and trucks).
And yeah Catch cans get a shitload of vapor turning into water, all that crap normally goes through your motor. People dont realize how much water is present during combustion, catch can is a good way of being able to actually see it.
