A little nervous about my new truck

I recently picked up my new 2010 Tacoma TRD Double Cab, Long Bed in Magnetic Grey. I grew up in New Zealand where the Hylux is legendary for its abilities and longevity so always wanted a Toyota.

With all this crap about Toyota in the news I'm a little nervous about the truck, in particular I am reluctant to mod anything for fear of having a problem and not being covered. I'd love to do a mild lift and add some new rims and tires, de-badge and perhaps a new exhaust and air intake. Forum has been really helpful in understanding my options for mods although I am still searching for a really good cargo /sport rack option.

Went to Rack and Road to put a truck rack on and learned max weight I can put on rack is 300lb due to the composite bed. I have to admit I did not realize the bed was plastic when I purchased truck. I thought it was steel with a plastic liner. My bad for not checking deeper. So I am trying to figure out best options for truck rack or roof rack to carry kayaks, skis bikes, lumber and ladders.

I have high hopes for this truck and really hope it lives up to my expectations. I do wonder whether I should have bought a full size truck but really don't want to be driving a Ford, Dodge or Chevy as they just seem to have so many problems, don't like the Titan and have heard it is being discontinued and the Tundra is just too freakin big.

Welcome , hope you do okay with the truck... and living in the states..... New Zealand is beautiful, was there (Auckland) for a day many, many years ago!

This is my third Tacoma 4WD... and the first one to drip anything on the garage floor... It was tranny fluid from the plug where the speedometer cable connect on the right side (for right hand steering trucks). It took two trips to the dealer to fix. Got a free rental car for the 2 days tey had it... very nice service depart. where I got my truck.

 

Dont worry, You will find out you made a good descision soon. I was nervous when I bought mine after a lifetime of owning ford trucks, but I was reassured after driving it a while and getting used to it.

 

Bought the same truck only in SR5 pyrite mica. I am not the least bit worried. Enjoy it that is why you bought it. Best of luck

You made the right choice. The only reason it is a big deal for toyota is because it never happens to them. It happens to the others so often no one cares.

 

Welcome to TW. Here's crossbars that I use to hold my gear. I recently installed a bike rack on there as well.

 

Yo congrats on the purchase. I Also got a 2010, picked mine up in sept 09. The Tacomas are great trucks dispite the bad press Toyota is getting right now, but on this site you'll hear threads of TSB (tech. service bulletins) you should check them out because other Taco owners have some good info on the trucks that will help you out in the future.
TSB's aren't recalls, but are service bulletins to the dealers regarding complaint from customers. Some of these will require the dealer to replace parts or re-flash some computer software. I had my rear leaf springs changed out and my auto/trans re-flashed all free from the dealer, i've attached 2 pdf's regarding the 2010 Tacomas tsb's if your vin number matches the VDS on the tsb's you can get these upgrades done. As there are threads regarding dealers that have done the tsb upgrade for Tacoma owners.

 

I also just purchased a 2010 dbl cab Tacoma. I didn't let the bad press bother me. However on the ride home from the lot the truck just died not even 1 mile away. Got it back to the dealer that same night. Turns out there was a defective wire on the core return from the alternator. Needless to say I am now nervous about this truck. How does this happen to a brand new truck. Hope it was just a freak thing..... I do love the truck.

 

Crossbars look great for shorter loads. Did you purchase or fabricate them yourself?

Woohoo!!! GL with the truck!! You will love it!! I was actually confused at first with the composite truck bed to! Turned out to be on of the best things about the truck. My dogs have an easier time back there compaired to a metal with a plastic liner. Stuff doesn't shift as much too.

I wouldn't worry about your truck. I picked up mine on November 29th just before all the stuff hit the fan for Toyota. For a very short time I was concerned about the various issues that the other models were suffering. That quickly faded once I started driving and enjoying the Tacoma. Besides, I have my own thoughts about all the recalls and issues suddenly surfacing. The "Toyota Way" will bring the company back to prominance and will continue to be the Brand others will try and emulate. Two months down the road most people won't give any of this a second thought. Enjoy your truck and congratulations!
