Would you trust this to hang a fan from?

I bought my house and had to crawl in the attic and put 2x4 supports in each room because we wanted to put fans up. It's do able. It's nasty. It sucks. But it's necessary to have that good solid support up there. Would have much rather had some up there before the lid went up and insulation went in. But my house is older than I am. What am I going to do.

 

yea, the proper way is two 2x4s. Ever see how flimsy a plastic box hanging on the side of a joist is?
Builder already had Electricians come out. It would be an extra to come back and re-wire. Can't do yourself (or builder) for permit to stay intact.
It's a shame but cities don't want you working on your own house.

 

Yeah but in reality most decent contractors have a good enough relationship with their subs to ask them for a small revisit... it's not even a rewire, just a box mount IF the already installed circuit can take the fan load. True about the permit integrity. After sign off, owner can easily get a permit to do electrical but that's after the fact and stupid. It should be done now while it's open. Hell, OP, get the electricians contact info and tell him you'll give a 6 pack if he hangs the new box.

 

Why don't you get the switch wired in for the fans while you are getting the house built?

 

I agree with many of them. Get the proper box, wiring and switch for a ceiling fan installed before drywall. I don't understand why the contractor won't do it. However, I don't believe he has any say in the electrical dept?

 

I looked it up, some building codes allow for spray foam to seal any draft areas (especially in unfinished attic spaces) around the junction boxes, as long as you use the proper foam (its orange which means fire block)and it doesn't enter the cavity.

 

Now is the time to put in a change order to upgrade the box for a fan and have a second circuit run to allow the fan to be separate from the lights without having to use the pull chains.

The proper way is a metal ceiling rated box, not a 2x4. NEC section 314.27C says any box used as sole support for a ceiling fan shall be listed for said purpose, and able to support 70 lb.
Fire the builder. Or call the electrical inspector.

 

Big box stores don't have that and if they do it'll be some real shit foam

Not familiar with codes outside of NC, but I think the point was missed. That is a light box, he is asking if you would hang a fan from that, not that it is its intended purpose. As a builder, fan prewire boxes, that are rated for fans, are an up-sale. Stupid, I know, but it's business. Most good electricians just mount a fan rated box in all areas where a fan would normally hang. Also as a builder, I would just put one in for you, the cost is minimal if at all.

 

He also asked for the proper box and the builder said no, which isn't super cool. Building codes do change from state to state, but electrical code standards are set nationally, that's the N in NEC. When I rough in a house or small room or whatevs, I like to talk to the customer to avoid stuff like this. Helps with repeat business.

 

Work with your Builder to have the Electrical Contractor install the Rated ceiling fan Assembly to avoid any problems later in your new house. Why F....around at this point in construction ? If you rig something together later & there's a fire or the fan falls on someone , the Electrical Contractor could be held liable as He is the Electrical Permit holder !!

 

If he is that much of a doosh about it, just let him finish it up and install an old work fan box after the fact. I think there like 15$ at lowes.

 

Sorry for lack of response for some reason I'm not getting notifications gents. Yeah, he wants $150 a fan box/wiring and I told him to piss up a rope. I didn't trust it myself but wanted a second opinion. I'm just going to go up in the crawl space and replace them with rated boxes when I take possession of the house, I did it in my current house and its not bad as long as it's not over 80 degrees out. Sweated my ass off last time. Thanks for the input guys.
