What is this in my glovebox?

I opened my glovebox today and on the side closest to the door was a black cylinder like object with a grey cap attached to the glovebox. What is it???

It maybe the shock, so the glovebox doesn't just fall when opened.

 

Oh, it was never connected!

how does it connect? i mean, the glove box seems to be in the way connecting it and ther is only two options to hook it back up.

 

No, because they a tampon holder in that spot instead.

I have the same problem. I am going to try to slide a plastic sleeve (ink pen barrell) over the bent nub, then drill through it as Siverback did. If possible, I want to use a stainless machine bolt so I can reinforce both ends with washers and put a nut on the back side of the plastic panel that the nub is attached to. If successful, I'll take pics. I am thinking it might be a little more permanent and sturdy solution. I may also epoxy a larger washer onto the back side of the flat panel the nub is attached to for better support. This entire set up is FUBAR 200%. Toyota did a great job designing this truck, but certainly failed here. Does anyone know if they fixed this in the 20007-2009 models? Just got through installing a Peripheral iPod interface adapter. I also removed the panel that both right and left center air vents are attached to....a bit more tricky, but done sucessfully. I keep my ipod in the tray to the lower right of the steering column.
