Ride differences between versions?

Aren't the 3rd gen coils a higher rating then the 2nd gen coils? I thought I read somewhere they increased the spring rate to like 700lb springs.

30PSI in a set of Michelin Defender LTX, in 265/75 size. In theory, it should provide a softer ride than stock.

 

I am of the opinion that a truck that wants to bounce into the ditch when you hit a bump is a deterioration from one that doesn't. I'm sure many would agree.

 

Except he has an SR5, so sport may be a step up.

Which is the same shocks as the SR5

OP, take the time to test drive a sport and off road, the scoop up some take offs from someone. It seems that lots of folks feel the shocks suck, I think my sport ride is fine.

 

The sport rides the worst as far as stiffness

 

I was just in a SR5 last week, and I like my sport ride better, but I'm no mechanic by any means.

 

My Sport rides better too. A lot better (smoother, not as bouncy--better rebound damping). My 2011 SR5 did too. That's where my original question stems from-- Is it just shocks, or something else? I'd hate to see the old man dump a pile of money into replacement shocks (something he's willing to do-- he laid out a grand on tires, $350 on seat covers), and not have any better (smoother) ride quality.

 

He could just go back to the dealership and test drive another SR5, an OR, and a Sport and see first off if there is a problem w/ his ride compared to another SR5 and if it's the same see what he likes out of the OR and Sport and then replicate.

Honestly just seems like you came here to argue, he didn't test drive it because of the reviews and now your asking for people's opinion on what to replace it with - you are setting yourself up for the same results.

What options does this $40k SR5 have that it cost more than a loaded Sport/Limited?

Only saying your limited and the SR have the same shocks, so it's subjective. The OP's dad needs to go test drive the different models and decide what's right for him.

 

Reviews had nothing to do with it. He drove both of mine. I think it's reasonable to think that the newer model of something shouldn't give a harsher ride.

We are going to test drive a TRD OR as soon as one shows up on the lot.

It's $40k because it's in Canada. A TRD Pro is $55k...

I love the ride in my new Sport (it's in another league compared to my previous 07 Sport) and your Dad's SR5 should ride softer. I agree with others, your Dad should test drive another SR5 and see if it is an issue specific to his truck. Good luck!

 

You can't go wrong with the advice above. TRD Off-Road suspension is smooth.

I think the smoothest 2017 Tacoma is the TRD Off-Road, double cab, long bed.

Before buying my TRDOR DCSB, I test drove the Limited, Sport, Off-Road SB & LB; all back-to-back at the dealership. The last model I test drove was the ORLB.

Two minutes into test drive, the salesman and I both looked at each other and said, "This one is the smoothest." haha.

2nd smoothest was the TRDOR DCSB.

The only reason I bought the short bed is because it fits in my garage.

Everyone that has been in my Tacoma has commented on how comfortable the ride is.

I don't think you will disappointed going with the TRD OR suspension.

For reference, I drove a 2009 Tundra SR5 4x2, 5.7L before trying the new 2017 tacomas. I felt that particular truck was bumpy compared to these 2017 Tacoma's. It hauled great and had low end torque for days....

 

I think it depends on the person. I had a 2014 sport before my 16 and I think the 16 rides way better! That's one of the very first things I noticed,but I guess everyone is gonna have different opinions on it

 

Highly recommend what I did, ride quality was already good, just made it way better. For comparasion of sorts, I have a Honda Accord Crosstour that rides butter smooth, my 2016 TRD Off Road with the Bilsteins 3rd gen I put on, rides not only smoother than the Crosstour, but when off-roading dampens out big time any big bumps/hits:
