Drive a car with all 4 drum brakes then tell me disc brakes won't stop you sooner. Come on Bob.

Isn't the front that does the majority of the stopping? So how much effect does there rear drums really have?

No doubt that the front makes 80% of the difference

If I knew what I know now, I would wait until the transmission hunting issues are finally resolved. Other than that, I really like my 2017.

Even plenty of Econoboxes now have Rear Discs as standard equipment, there really is no excuse to not be on the Tacoma by now.

Not arguing they are better, but is our truck a performance truck?

So really what part of that 20 percent is missing compared to discs?

I think he is, the Toyota Landcruiser is a quite the Offroad Beast as are a few 4 Runner Models and those have Rear Discs, I would like to hear Seatbelt Mike explain himself out of that.

No. I would not buy a new thrid gen again. Traded mine in after 14,000 miles. I had the DCLB- it's too big to really be considered a mountain trail rig, and too small too carry all my shit (found out the hard way). MPG's sucked for a small truck, tranny sucked, the hood shook- too many little nit-picky bs quality control issues with this Toyota. Went back to a full size 1/4 ton, extended cab, 6.6' bed in a LTZ trim Silverado.

Honestly the Chevy is a much better truck than the Tacoma. More powerful, comfortable as sin, better MPG's, better towing, hauling.. And honestly it too is not a trail rig- so I kinda lost nothing by going back to a full size.

Personally I don't care if the Toyota has 20% better resale value over time. During the time I own thing I want to be happy- and I tend to hold trucks long term. The Tacoma was the exception.

If I need a dedicated trail rig after my 98 Jeep Cherokee explodes, I'll consider a pre-Tacoma Toyota truck, or a 1st or 2nd gen beater rig. Manual trans, xtd cab, long bed. No four doors.

A lot if you carry a load in the bed.

And the article went on to talk about how drums are fine for the normal vehicle operation.

I'll quote some that followed what you quoted.

I do agree for those that tow a lot, carry a lot of weight that this set up may not be right. I would get a full size then. As a DD its fine. The issue is the full sizes are getting better mpgs than the mid size. My hope is with the mid size market heating up this will change.

    Drum vs. Disc: Today

In today's automotive pantheon, it's not uncommon to find four-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment on medium-priced, non performance-oriented models. The majority of new vehicles, however, continue to utilize a front-disc/rear-drum brake setup. What does this say about the current state of braking systems? Are these manufacturers sacrificing vehicle safety in order to save a few bucks by installing disc brakes on only the front wheels?

While a "yes" answer would certainly be great for increasing Town Hall traffic, the truth is that today's disc/drum setups are completely adequate for the majority of new cars. Remember that both disc and drum brake design has been vastly improved in the last 20 years. In fact, the current rear drum brake systems on today's cars would provide better stopping performance then the front disc setups of the '70s. And today's front disc brakes are truly exceptional in terms of stopping power. Combined with the fact that between 60 and 90 percent of a vehicle's stopping power comes from the front wheels, it's clear that a well-designed, modern drum brake is all that's required for most rear wheel brake duty.

That Article was from 2009, as I mentioned a couple Posts back even plenty of Econoboxes now have Rear Disc Brakes, Drums are just far outdated today.

New CARS.. Trucks are trucks, and trucks, when loaded, have different stopping requirements. Honestly I'm not sure why it's such a hot debate. The fact is discs stop better and resist overheating better. It's also a big plus if you want to haul or tow. Both discs and drums can get wonky off road- stones gouges on discs, and sand and water in drums- so the benefit off-road is really arguable at best in favor of drums.

It's certainly not an argument I would be willing to carry a torch for.

Hell the big rigs are beginning to shift to air-discs now. The upfront cost is higher, but maintenance costs are lower and stopping distances are greatly reduced.

No. I love my new rig but there's querps with her unlike by Gen 1 2002 SR5 AC 4x4 with 240,000 miles on her. The acceleration lag is concerning in making a left had turn against traffic and a real safety issue. Doesn't happen often but when it does it creates brown spots on one 's pants. But here's another bullshit thing, my SR5 does not have the side turn/alarm system although it's mandated for all 2016 models. The SR5 is the exception. The Gen 3 has a right side blind spot with reduced rear mirrows.

Look, wait for the 2018. Listen to the folks who get 'em and then make your decision. This Forum is worth it's wait in gold for what folks experience. They are not all whiners. They have spent $35K plus for a rig which has had an incredible history on reliability but have had issues. Not deal breakers but I'd wait for the 2018 models to clean up a few clichés.

Good luck in what ever decision you make.

I just figured out the telescoping wheel thing myself. For some reason I got the impression it only tilted up or down. Had to view a Youtube video to figure it out. For me it's not intuitive to pull the steering wheel toward me when I pop the latch.

There are other people on the forum that had griped about no telescoping column...and more than a few SR owners have been saying "at least mine has a telescoping steering wheel." Apparently SR5's do too.

Now I don't have to do the knee limbo when I get into the drivers seat.

I'm not buying a 3rd Gen just because it still has drum brakes. Too many issues with the new model as seen on this board. Toyota had a long time to get the 3rd Gen right and this new model is a huge disappointment. Still has some of the same issues as the 2nd Gen....really Toyota!
