What Diff Drop Brand To Get?

I am looking into diff drops for my 05 tacoma and I am wondering if there are certain brands to stay away from or if it really matters? I want the toytec diff drop but the shipping is rediculous. I found this one on Amazon. Any suggestions?

If your CV boot fins are touching, just do the boot slide mod or get boots designed for high angle. The CV joints themselves will handle the higher angle mechanically just fine.

 

Ok thanks for the reply. May be a dumb question, but if the fins are touching which part? Do they do more harm than good due to the fact that if you hit a rock or something they can rip shit up down there?

 

^You wanted a diff drop for a reason, right? For most people it's because they see the CV joints are at an angle, and the CV boot fins are touching each other, which can wear out the boot pretty quickly:



Yes, the diff drop causes the diff mounts to protrude below the frame outline. If you hit a rock or something, the diff gets to punch a hole in the engine like mjp2 experienced...

For the record, there has been ONE failure(~7 years ago)caused by a modified skid plate on a RACE TRUCK during a RACE where he slammed into a rock while RACING.

The diff drop does in fact improve cv angles on the 2gen Tacoma.

 

I only had issues with fins rubbing when I had my lift cranked up higher than 3" of lift, after I dropped it down to less than that I stopped having rubbing issues.

I don't race, just drive around the desert like an idiot enjoying myself and a little rock crawling here and there. I've had my skid plates bent up into and touching/damn near touching my front diff 2 times now. If I had a differential drop there's a good chance I would have had to have bought a new differential by now. It was because of that thread that I never installed one and definitely appreciate the report that he made of the incident to inform others of potential issues.

I should probably get a 1/4" IFS skid....

 

Just a thought... But, do you think getting a 1 inch by however long you need of square steel tubing to tack on in between the diff drop spacers and re-engineering your skid plate to go over this tubing would be enough to glide over a rock without anything getting hung up? Like I said just a thought. I havent really looked under to see if this would be feasible but it seems like it would solve the issues. Would just need some scrap steel and a welder and it should work out I would think.

 

Never even considered trying to make a diff drop work. After the community (or at least the people that offroad on this forum) as a whole disregarded their usefulness never looked into. There are other considerations underneath the truck in that area.......skid plate bracing, clearances above the skid plate, maximizing clearances below the plate. I don't know how your proposal would affect those considerations.

People who use their trucks aggressively are the first to find potential issues. It would be crazy to ignore their reports and make the same mistakes they did. But if you've never had problems with you diff drop, more power to you.

 

You must not have read my first post. One person had an issue. If you look into WHY that ONE person had the issue you'll know why. A PROPER skid plate is essential if you're going to be off-roading that aggressively.

 

I have a drop kit,and I am not taking mine off as I have not had any problems with it,however I never do extreme racing either,besides some say no drop kit and an equal number say yes drop kit,so who knows.

 

I'm removing mine the next time my truck is on my hoist for tire swap. Do not recommend.

I installed it as part of my lift and now they are advising not to install them.

 

Who is advising?
