Why did the double cab 5 luggers come with fender flares?

It never made sense to me. They have the smaller tires and therefore the flares are way wider than they need to be. Additionally they look a bit silly, like monster trucks with their small "travel tires" on. The regular and access cab 5 luggers did not have flares.

Probably because very few D.C. 4cyl 5 lugs were ever made in comparison to other configurations, and 5 lug access and reg cabs don't come in short beds so Toyota deemed it unworthy to waste money on making smooth short bed fenders with no holes, so they left them with the flares, and then needed front to match so again, left the flares.

My best guess. And honestly the flares being present isn't what makes the vehicle look silly....it's a low 4 door and on tiny ass tires

I think the DCSB 5 luggers were introduced in 2012, toyota probably realized that they were going to have backstock of parts and it was their most popular configuration of cab in the 6 lugger. So rather than redesign quarter panels completely. They just used the same quarters and flares from the 6 lugers.

This is probably the right answer. But I don't think the reg cab and access cab 5 luggers look silly.

I think they're awesome too, I just wish they didn't have those flares!

Saw one with X-runner wheels & it looked great. They painted the black flares body color.
