Man, what is up with this bolt not wanting to thread into the pillar hole? This is frustrating. I can't seem to get the threads started to save my life. And it's pretty tight quarters doing this while reaching through the steering wheel. Any tips here?

 

Yes, this is a royal pain but there is a pretty easy fix. The issue I believe is that the factory bolt is self threading which results in an overly tight thread in the nut on the body. In addition the A pillar trim panel isn't perfectly aligned usually so it is applying a side force to your bolt while you try to thread. I had no luck threading my M6 bolt at first either.

Solution for me was to remove the A pillar trim panel to see what was going on and make it easier to make sure nothing was being cross threaded. Then I alternated putting the factory bolt back in and then my new bolt. The new bolt was initially difficult to get in and I wouldn't necessarily thread it all the way in - just until it was tight - and I was very careful not to cross thread. After maybe four cycles alternating between the factory bolt and new bolt the new bolt was now going in easily. Put the A pillar trim back on and the job went easy from there. You could probably do all that without removing the A pillar trim panel but I was worried about cross threading something. Panel comes off quite easily and goes back on real easy too.

Oh jeesh, my bad. It would help if I used an M6 instead of an M8. Got it mounted now. It's nice to not have my phone blocking the vent any more.

 

I just did it today. I feel like it's too close to the steering wheel. I hope to get used to it. I"m using it for a GPS though.

 

For me rotating the arm a bit allowed for a bit more movement that allowed me to push it back a bit. Having the adjustment handle facing straight down is the sweet spot in my truck. Also, once you know you have the perfect position you can give the adjustment handle a tweak with an open end wrench - 10mm I believe - to ensure without a doubt that it won't move.

I have 10 m6x55 left if someone could use them. My first gen seems deeper than the 2nd gen for some reason. Also have 6 m6x60 i could part with. I wound up paying about 1.40 a piece for them, but live and learn I guess. PM me if you need one or two or 16.

 

My iPhone ends up being very close the steering wheel, but it does not interfere with my hand movement at all. Just something to get used to. I actually really like how visible it is compared to other mounting options in the truck. The only issue I have is the power cable does run into the turn-signal leaver. But I can live with that.

 

I've been following this thread for a while. Every time it makes me want to buy something so I can put this mount in.

 

I finally managed to do this on my 1st Gen ('98 PreRunner) looks like we have the same M6 bolt pattern but our handles are shallower so it looks like you could use a shorter bolt (maybe even the factory one) but I didn't bother since I went ahead and bought a 60mm.

I'll post more pics tomorrow when I get the articulating arm. Just wanted to get the ball mounted so I don't have do much work when the arm comes.

TL;DR - yes it works on 1st gens too

 

Here it is in my '98! We have a lot less room and clearance from the steering wheel to the grab handle so it's a little difficult to get a good angle, but it works!

I used the three piece articulating arm to have more room and mounting possibilities. I couldn't find a good way to position the mount above the dash and behind he steering wheel so I have to run it like this.

 

I got excited when I was ordering all the RAM Mount parts off Amazon and it didn't occur to me that Home Depot would have the bolts and all the M6 hardware I needed. (I ended up just buying a black bolt there to match the finish)

I ordered six (6) M6x60mm hex bolts that's used for this mount. It costs more for me to return it to Amazon so I thought I'd pay it forward.

If anyone needs an M6x60mm bolt if you're taking on this project quote this and message me your address and I'll mail it to you free of charge. (Lower 48 States only) I'll throw in some leftover M6 hardware (while supplies last) too.

So finally got around to doing this and its kind of a bitch for a 1st gen. was a lot of trial and error to get it perfect to get enough of the ball exposed. Also did this for my cousin on his 2nd gen and i was jealous how perfect it was with your instructions but not so much for me haha.

Used a 60mm bolt with stacked washers, and had to go with the swivel adapter the long arm adapter pushed to far to window and blocked a lot of view or too close to steering wheel and was in my way so i did this. It worked out great IMO.. also didnt help having an iphone7+ shits huge
