Does anyone know how far you can go past your 5000 mile oil change before they want to void your warranty
My wife was in the hospital and I had to travel back-and-forth so I got like 1000 miles over

Oil Change interval on the 3rd Gen is 10,000 Miles, sounds like you are good to go for awhile.

Yep. As long as its only been changed at the dealer. They'll use the full synthetic blend that lasts 10k. It's just annoying that the warning comes on every 5k, but its a good idea to rotate the tires at that time.

You can change it yourself too, I have never seen 0W-20 that is not Synthetic.

Even though I used to do it myself, all I do now is call my dealership rep and switch vehicles with him in the morning when I get to work (he drives a taco too!) and then get my complimentary oil change from Toyota care and then he brings it back at the end of the day.

My Dealer offers that to me too, but I still prefer to do my own, I am just picky about people messing with my vehicles.

So along these lines, my warning for change at 5k came on and I called to schedule with 2 different dealers and both told me they're good until 10k but they'll rotate tires and what not. So why have a 5k warning if it's good until 10?
In conjunction with this, I used to have a '14 Mazda 3 that used 0w 20 also and they highly recommended every 5k, but the rub... I was paying then, not covered like the taco.
Called longtime family friend mechanic and he said about 7k is top end for that oil, especially when u consider the small size of the filter in these trucks. If not, you're just recirculating the same filthy oil.
Anyway I can get around this? I want it covered but really scared to wait until 10k (especially since it's the first/break in) and don't want to pay. I opted for the coverage bc they told me it was included and at every 5k but all I have is word of the salesman. Can I claim I use mine under the heavy use conditions that recommend it at 5k and it'll be covered?

It's not an oil change warning, and salesman lied to you.

Well I am aware that he did that. Shocker, right!? I was just laying down the background. Guess by doing so I was hoping for more useful info from mechanics and 1st hand experience about the differences in life and what recommendations people have and what I should go with and tips or tricks on how to get them to cover it.

changing the oil isn't the only maintenance item. Plenty of stuff to check every/do every 5k. The awesome thing about buying a new car is that you can maintain it right from the start and you wont develop all those small stupid issues down the road. Realistically thought, for the first 20k you wont have to do much but it would be good to get into the habit. Take a look in the maintenance manual for things to check, but also greasing your ujoints evvery 5k is also a good idea, along with lubricating your door hinges, locking mechanism, window tracks.

So you don't believe that the oil change interval that Toyota gave as 10K is real, but have a friend that is a mechanic say 7K. If that's what you want to believe fine.

The light goes on every 5K and it's not an oil change light, but you don't want to hear that apparently.

I saw that but, like in my earlier post, I find it odd that the same oil is rated for twice as long in a motor that's under higher stress loads etc than my old Mazda.

So @Schiel1 or someone else who might know, think I can just claim extensive idling and towing and get them to cover under Toyota care? Thanks for the constructive help.

Everyone has there own opinion but my oil will never go over 5000 miles. VW has a 10,000 mile oil change interval also. While working at VW I spoke with the mechanics about it and they highly advised not going the 10,000 miles. Just smell your oil at 10,000 miles and make you own conclusions. BURNT!

I am not crazy about 10k changes either, I have changed on my Ex's Jetta and she always goes beyond 10k. I always expect her oil to have sludge but it is the opposite as it looks like black water cause its so thin.
