What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

This is a fantastic idea. Why Toyota opted to not put a cabin filter on these trucks, I have no idea. They probably need it more than the average commuter car who drives solely on tarmac.

Where are the fresh air intake points on the outside and inside? I know the outside is somewhere on the cowl, I just don't know exactly where. No idea where the interior point is.

 

Passenger side into the cowl under the where the wipers are. You can take off the wipers and the cowling pretty easily and its a small hole probably around 3''x5''

 

Oh yeah now I recall that from when I was trying to address a vent odor.
Would that be the only/easiest/most efficient spot to address? Most vehicles seem have their filters on the interior more (typically behind the glove box).

 

yea the inlet to the fan motor is there and unless you want to pull the whole motor to gain access to it, id just go for the cowling honestly. Pulling the motor is a pain

I'll have to take the cover off and take a look at it. Maybe I'll figure out a way to modify an air filter to fit. And by that, I mean I will probably come up with nothing better than cut one to size and tape it on...

 

If you found the right size and did small amount of trimming to get it to sit in there tight could skip the tape i bet. Should be do able.

 

This is true. There isn't a great amount of intake pressure.

 

Probably want to start with a filter media that is fairly porous, that blower motor is going to be working harder to pull air through the filter and that would suck to burn it up.

Can someone tell me how this gear comes out of the front diff? Trying to transfer everything to my 4.88 ARB......

 

So under the cowl is easiest. Could just get a generic porous air filter so it wont restrict too much cut it to size and I could make a seal to go around it with some home depo rubber trim and bam, air filter!
How about mousture in that cowl. You think the filter will get pretty wet there though? Id hate to trade dirty air for moldy air.

 

That's a valid concern. idk if it's a mold issue or not, but I do have a vent odor that I did mange to get rid of for the large part but is still present. Sort of musty I guess you could say. My thought was moisture. If that's the case, and moisture does get in there enough to already cause a problem, then perhaps adding something absorbent in there might be a bad idea. hmm.

 

Use two large screw drivers on opposite side and pry down hard. It'll take more error than you think. Sucker may fly out at speed so be ready. Snap ring on it is a big one.

Yea. One of those things that takes more effort than your originally comfortable with.

Two long big screw drivers will pop it out though.

 

I try and do some experimenting on it durring the next rain storm or when I wash it. Rainstorm is more likely...

too true.

Next time I'm down near it, I will check out a parts store and see what sizes and types of filters they have. A performance oriented filter would probably be better suited, and overall smaller to begin with since it'd get cut up anyway.
