That explains a lot. I thought you were talking about the guy planning to tow his 3200-3800lb utility trailer, not the guy with the travel trailer.

Anyway, looked at my truck earlier, has the 4 leaf pack tsb, took the sandbags out and raised another inch or so. Gonna hitch up tomorrow and have a neighbor drive his rzr on it and see how it looks.

I have a 2017 double cab 4x4 v6 with tow package. WD hitch and sway bars coming with camper and will be purchasing a brake controller. Am I asking for trouble? Only towing around Texas 4 times a year or so.
Any input would be appreciated.

 

That puts you 50lbs over the tongue weight and only leaves 1400 pounds between dry weight and the trucks tow limit. I wouldn't do it.

Had the neighbor throw his rzr on..should have had him backup and level it out but this is what it looked like. Rear when down roughly 1.5"

 

Agreed. Asking for trouble and a terrible towing experience.

 

The more I've been reading I think I'm going to go another route. I don't want to stress over what extra gear I can pack nor do I want to be at the trucks max every time I take a trip. Thanks for the input. Probably going to find something smaller or fork over the money and go aluminum frame and ultra lite.

 

It doesn't look to bad from the pics. But you will put more weight in the bed of the truck maybe and the trailer. I would at least go with the timbrens or helper spring from Helwig (,https://www.suspensionconnection.com/1518-tacoma-helper.html?gclid=CKK5i7_frtICFY6FswodQXMH2g) to avoid the rear from sagging to much. I would go with the helper spring, it will give you a better ride with and without the trailer in tow. BTW, I like the wheels on the truck.

 

I'm pretty convinced on going to Firestone bags. From what I understand the helper springs mount above the factory ones? The one you listed says for 2wd non trd models?

 

Yeah they do have them for 4x4 also, just wanted to get you in the general idea of your options. The helper spring is a lot cheaper than the ride rite bags. Don't get me wrong, I did end up with the ride rite bags, but only because the weight I tow is a lot. Not sure what your $$ is, but at least there are options for your situation. The ride rite will get you all around better ride no matter what you are towing, it just cost$$ in the long run.

 

Says to order part #980 if you have the rear leaf tsb completed. When I go to that pack says it only fits 12-16 models. Am I doing something wrong?

Gotcha, I appreciate it! $$ wise it's a lot better but I think bags would be a better long term fix. Max trailer weight I'd be looking at is 3500# and bed weight probably around 250-300#.

 

The TSB leaf springs are the four leaf pack springs the 12-15 models had from the factory.

 

If i'm not mistaken you can go with the 979, give them a call and check. I understand your question, I used the 979 on my truck at one time, but then again my truck is a 2013.

Agreed, long tem the bags are the way to go. Bite the bullet and install the bags, however If you install the bags I highly suggest installing the on board compressor for the extra cash, wow is it way easier than stopping at a gas station and adding air or stopping on the side of the road and taking air out. Bags with compressor is the way to go.

 

What location did you use to install your compressor? I'm assuming you use the wireless remote model? If you have any pics I'd appreciate it.
