99 Tacoma no crank

Dealing with a 99 tacoma (5 lug) with the 2.4 and manual trans. Push in the clutch, turn the key, nothing. Truck turns on like normal but won't crank at all and won't start.

Battery cables, battery, and starter were replaced with no fix for the issue. No CEL but we scanned it anyway with no stored codes. Made sure the clutch is pushing in the button under the dash (clutch safety switch?) and it is. Listened to the fuse block under the hood and I can hear it click with the turn of the key.

We can push start the truck and it runs fine once it's running. I figure I'd start here before throwing parts at it

 

There is a black/red 18 gauge wire that runs from the starter relay in the fusebox under the hood. If you just tap into it and run it to a ground (I used the same fender ground as the negative from the battery) your ignition switch will bypass all the safety interlocks from the neutral safety switch. Not suggesting you bypass your safety system just letting you know how to

 

Have you tried a new starter relay ?
It could also be the starter switch.

 

I figured the new starter would have all the new stuff needed if the starter was bad.

Could the relay be bad even though it clicked?

 

I had no idea! I'll try that tomorrow.

 

if you want a picture of the wire let me know and I will go remove the two bolts on the fuse box and snap a pic

 

I believe on the 99 the starter relay and headlight relay are both 4 pin and interchangeable. Try swapping them. If it starts then the relay is bad.
If still no start. Have someone hold it in the start position and check both wires at starter for power.

 

Get someone to help you & whack the starter with a hammer while turning the key to "start"...

actually if you don't mind. I looked under there and don't want to cut the wrong one.

 

The new starter motor has a solenoid but not the switch or relay. If that click you hear is the under-hood relay (where all the fuses are) it still could be bad. Those same relays are in most Toyotas from the 90's (Camry, Corolla, etc), so are easily obtained at any wrecking yard. I always carry a spare.

 

Sorry, I guess I need to read the OP better...I see now that you already replaced the starter/solenoid...forget whacking it with a hammer.
Sound like the starter is not getting power. As tan4x4 says, could be a bad relay even though it is clicking...Do you have a multi-meter? That's an easy diagnosis...

 

So you have to remove the cover on the fuse box, the two 10mm bolts attaching the box to the body then remove the lower portion of the box with the 4 tabs. Locate the starter relay from the bottom side and you will see the wire. cut that wire and ground it, it should bypass the safety switches and start, if that is your issue

This is a horrible idea. Don't hack away at your wiring, trouble-shoot and fix it properly.

 

To each there own. Nobody said it had to be a permanent mod and it is still safer than push starting a car and destroying the emissions components if you need to get to and from work. It is easily reversible and allows someone who has to rely on it as daily transportation an option. It can take a lot of time and money to chase down electrical gremlins, especially for people without the proper tools, know how and diagrams. It was offered as an option not as a must do this YMMV

 

That's a shrink and seal eyelet on your ground wire. Heat it up and shrink it.

 

Agree all your eliminating is the clutch switch or park/neutral switch.

Thanks I never would have figured that out. I'll try to remember to do that when I am wrapping everything up

 

Hot-wiring to start a car is acceptable if you are stranded in the middle of no-where, so I can see where it would come in handy, when a tow-truck is not available.

However, now I'm questioning the details of your 'get around'.
Looking at the PDF, there are no 'B-R' wires going to or from the starter relay.

 

Did you check the safety switch for the clutch? Sorry if you have, I didn't feel like reading through all the replies. The bumper on the clutch pedal could have broken or the switch itself could be bad. You can always turn the switch on and jump the starter solenoid to see if that works. I had to do that on my Civic for a while until I found those pedal bumpers I mentioned.
